Off Season Weight for BJJ and other Combat Sports

Cut 5kg in one week!

Well not really but I know that’s what you want to hear.

Everyone wants a quick fix to help them make weight, whether it be a new diet, a pill or some kind of potion that magically drops fat while giving you super massive muscles and a berimbolo that would leave the Miayos standing there like a slack jawed idiot.

The truth of the matter is that it takes working all year long to make sure that you perform the very best in your weight class. If you really want to be the very best that you can be you need to be working on everything all year to make sure that you are the strongest, fastest and most technical fighter on the mat.

Product Review - Biotest Carbolin 19

THIS IS AN OLD PRODUCT REVIEW THAT WAS DONE A GOOD FEW YEARS AGO. I WOULD NOW USE SOME DIFFERENT PRODUCTS AND STRATEGIES THAT ARE LISTED BELOW. HOWEVER INDIGO 3G IS STILL AVAILABLE SO I THOUGHT I WOULD REPOST THIS.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT I WOULD DO DIFFERENT JUST DROP ME A MESSAGE VIA THE CONTACT FORM.

Fat loss.

It's always going to be THE hot topic in nutrition, especially with the society we live in.

While most realise that it takes sound nutritional planning, hard training and great recovery to get the body of your dreams, some still crave a magic pill.

Or at the very least, a bit of a hand getting that extra edge!

Now I'm the first to tell anyone that looking for supplements to help you move towards your goals is the last thing that you should be looking at.

However if you have everything in line and are just looking for that extra couple of percent then there are a couple of products that I recommend (such as Indigo 3G if you're looking to manage your carb intake and Hot Rox if you're looking for a fat burner).

One of the other things I have been looking at is Biotests carbolic 19.

I started to look at Carbolin 19 a while ago before I tried Indigo 3G. My thinking was not to use the product as a fat burner but as a nutrient partner. While it isn't as potent as Indigo 3G it certainly has some good science behind it.

You can read the article on it HERE

As you can see by the article the supplement is designed to slowly and steadily move your body composition towards more muscle and less fat.

So what did I think?

To be honest my experience of Carbolin 19 was a very positive one.

I kept all macros and training exactly the same and simply added 3 capsules to my day. 2 just before a workout and one about 6-8 hours apart. The first thing I noticed was absolutely nothing.

I mean zero.

I noticed no effect for the first couple of weeks at all. Well nothing out of the ordinary fluctuations that I typically see. However I kept seeing my weight creep up, but my waist measurement go down (I keep an eye on this area as it's the the first place that I accumulate fat). And it kept happening.

I gained 4 pounds and had to scale back the amount I was taking as I was quickly moving out of my weight class (bigger people trying to kill me is no fun). I scaled it back to 2 caps a day and the results slowed down a bit, however I was still gaining when the bottle ran out.

Now I know that there is a lot of people out there who will scoff at 'only' 4 pounds in a month.

That's completely fine.

I know that there is a lot of people out there perma-bulking on gear that aim for a lot more than that. However I track everything to a very geeky degree and I know what variables effect me and what doesn't.

4 pounds as a natural athlete with no other changes is no joke.

Am I going to keep taking it?

Well no. the simple reason is that it isn't right for me or my goals. If I was looking to move up a weight class or didn't care about stepping on a scale for a competition then I would be straight back on it!

Is this for everyone?

If you want to increase the amount of muscle you are carrying while decreasing the amount of fat that you're carrying then I would recommend it (only if the rest of your training, diet and recovery are in order).

However if you are just starting out on your weight loss journey or are experienced, at the top of your weight class or aren't weight training seriously, I would give it a miss.

Just like any supplement, it can have very positive effects on you IF it's the right product and you know what you are doing!

Carbolin 19 costs £49.99 for 60 capsules and is available HERE

Mike

10 Quick Diet Tips

  Hey Guys,

I thought that I would do a quick blog this week on some handy diet tips. Give them a read and feel free to add your own!

  1. Be dedicated. I know this is a boring tip but it's still the most vital. Be consistent with a nutrition plan is more than half the battle. You can have the best nutrition plan that was ever created, nut if you don't follow it then you're going to lose out.

  2. Eat lots of green veg. Unless your plan states that you should only have a certain amount, eat as much green veg as you like. This will help keep you full and won't add much calories. Eat 1kg of broccoli, then tell me how much you want to eat a sandwich :)

Competition Day for BJJ

Next time you are at a BJJ competition take a look around.

You will see people eating all sorts of crazy and wonderful foods that they think will help give them the edge on the mat. People are looking to get the smallest of advantages on their opponents and walk away with some precious metal around their neck.

But are they wasting their time or even worse, hindering their performance?

The object of this blog post is to try to give you a bit of a better idea on what to eat come competition day.

Product Review - Biotest MAG-10 protein

 Hey Guys,

Today I want to talk about Biotests Mag-10.

Mag-10 is a very fast acting protein which has a posh name of highly structuralised Di and Tripeptides from hydrolysed bioactive casein.

Right, now I know that this sounds a bit science and posh but bare with me. For a while now I have been after a VERY fast acting protein for myself and clients, to help drive amines and other goodies into the muscle when training. The problem with a normal whey isolate is that it is just to damn slow. It takes roughly 20-30 mins for a good whey isolate to get digested and enter the blood stream. Now while this isn't bad at certain times of the day, it's far to slow to be consumed during a training session.

Now when I started to look about for a suitable protein I knew that there was a product called Anaconda by Biotest that was available in the USA. The problem was that it was very expensive. To get the product shipped over would cost well over £100 per tub. Not ideal for me or my clients! I scoured the UK market and found 2 alternatives. Myproteins Peptopro and PhD Pharma whey. I personally liked peptopro and stuck with it for a long time (my only gripe was when the halved the bag size for the same price).

Then about 2 months ago, I heard that Biotest had opened a UK outlet. I immediately purchased a tub of their new product (which replaced Anaconda) Mag-10. The product was now slightly different offering a fast acting 'pulse' of protein and a few carbs from branched cyclic dextrin and isomulatose. Now while this carb content wasn't enough to bother me (as it would be taken while I was training) it was still 11g per serving that I would prefer to be left out. It was the 20g of hydrolysed casein that I wanted!

I'll be honest and say that straight away I was impressed. No bloating, great taste, easy digestion. I was training to get beach ready for a holiday at the time and was leaning out (sue me I'm a little vain when I have to take my shirt off), I was training twice a day on a very limited calorific intake. I using Mag-10 during both workouts and I used it when I fasted once a week. I was able to keep all my muscle and get down to sub 10% body fat with veins on my lower abs (I'm not saying this lasted long while on an all inclusive holiday though...).

Since coming back I have combined the product with more branched cyclic dextrin for my current workout protocol and it has continued to perform brilliantly.

The only problems I have with the product are,

  • It's a little pricey. at £60 for a 900g tub, it isn't the cheapest protein out there. However you do get what you pay for (and by comparison Myproteins peptopro is £40 for 500g).

  • The customer service team at Biotest UK. I had a small issue regarding a discount code that I had received not working. When I contacted them I got sarcastic and condescending E mails back without the issue being resolved.

All in all, if you are looking for a very fast acting protein, this is the one I would recommend.

If you would like to have a product reviewed then drop me a line at mike.unorthodox@gmail.com

For the purposes for being open and honourable, the only company that I am affiliated with is Scramble however I have worked with or consulted for a few other companies. I will always high light in the reviews if this is the case.

Mike

Steroids in BJJ

THIS IS AN OLD ARTICLE I WROTE FOR BJJ STYLE. SOME OF THE INFORMATION IN THIS HAS NOW CHANGED SO MAKE SURE YOU DOUBLE CHECK.

Let’s get some stuff out of the way.

Steroids are in BJJ.

They are at the highest and lowest levels of the sport and they are here to stay.

Now before you start warming up your fingers for hate mail, take a second to read through this article before you vomit hate and insults onto an E Mail that I won’t read. I am not anti or pro steroid. I have worked with athletes who have used and those who haven’t. I’ve worked with athletes across a vast array of sports, many of which included drug testing. I am not a drugs coach or a doctor (although I am lucky enough to have colleagues who are). The views I express here are my own and are a reflection of what I see happening.

Product Review - Biotest Plazma

 Hey Guys,

THIS IS AN OLD PRODUCT REVIEW THAT WAS DONE A GOOD FEW YEARS AGO. I WOULD NOW USE SOME DIFFERENT PRODUCTS AND STRATEGIES THAT ARE LISTED BELOW. HOWEVER IT IS STILL AVAILABLE SO I THOUGHT I WOULD REPOST THIS.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT I WOULD DO DIFFERENT JUST DROP ME A MESSAGE VIA THE CONTACT FORM.

Today I wanted to talk about Biotest Plazma.

Plazma is a product that has been around for a while. It gains a lot of love and hate from people in the supplement world. I have been using the product since its release and have tested it on numerous clients as well as myself in a variety of different situations.

Here is what Biotest had to say about it,

At the elite level, the physical demands of working at maximum intensity are so extreme that it can only be done for a week or two at a time before backing off to let the body recover. With Plazma™ that's no longer true.

Plazma™ contains a unique blend of fast-acting di- and tripeptides that produce biological activities and effects in muscle that go far beyond other proteins and amino acids. The formula also contains a special carbohydrate complex that in addition to increasing metabolic rate, drives these di- and tripeptides and other key nutrients into the muscle cell to the point of creating a high-performance pump effect.

By uniquely preloading and driving these key nutrients deep into muscle, Plazma™ enables you to perform at and beyond your limits while recovering and gaining so fast you'll be itching to get back in the gym and do it again. The recovery rate and the increased gains you're going to experience from Plazma™ will be shocking. So, don't hold back in the gym, and train your heart out. You'll completely recover, grow, and be ready for more.

Ok, so the details!

Plazma is basically a low osmolity, very fast acting carb source that is designed to be taken before and after training or competition. Because it is very fast acting and easily digestible, it is used by the body straight away and shuttled to your muscles where you need it most during training.

As previously mentioned I have tried this out with myself and numerous clients from all different backgrounds. I have used this product on fighters, weight lifters, Crossfitters, Body Builders, Track athletes, triathlon athletes and many others. the results has been the same right across the board, this stuff flat out works.

In many athletes I have used this to completely eliminate soreness and out recovery through the roof. After getting the dosage right many athletes added more sessions into their training as their recovery time simply halved.

Plazma is great for not only normal training but also for competition. As it is easily digested and absorbed without causing bloating, it is ideal for competition where you need to re fuel between matches or front load a lot of nutrients.

It mixes great (if you follow the instructions) and can be flavoured depending on which flavouring you choose (I personally like Orange and Berry). The product keeps really well so you can mix it up the night before and keep it in the fridge. Make sure that you use the amount of water it states though as lesser amounts can give some people a funny tummy.

I will say that the marketing claims of Biotest are slightly on the exaggerated side, however very few products get close to this. The only problem for some is simply drinking the amount of water during training. While this may be a lot of fluid, your body soon gets used to it.

I really couldn't recommend this product enough. It has changed a lot of peoples training and recovery and I will continue to recommend it to training partners and clients.

Plazma is available from Biotest for £69.99 and is available HERE

Stay healthy,

Mike

Product Review - Biotest Indigo 3G

 Hey Guys,

Today I want to talk about Biotests Indigo 3G.

As many of you will know, I have been trialling this product for a while to see what all of the hype was about.

Rather than going through my complete experience with the product, I will post links below to previous posts so that you can get a good idea of what I did, then post a conclusion below.
Here is what Biotest have to say about Indigo 3G,

Indigo 3G is Biotests latest creation with regards to selective nutrient repartitioning agent, what this means is that it helps your body absorb nutrients effectively and to ensure that your muscles are receiving an adequate amount of nutrients to keep up with their workload.
In simple terms the Indigo 3G helps to turn all of the food you eat into muscle instead of fat. This product features a self-micro emulsifying delivery system, this is meant to greatly increase the following:

  • Potency.

  • Bioavailability.

  • Stability.

The main benefit of this product is that it will deliver greater levels of C3G in your blood. This is the ingredient which is needed and the levels required to achieve maximum results for muscle enhancement and performance.

Sounds great right?

So is it snake oil or is it all it claims to be?

Now on the old blog I talked quite a bit on my experiences with the product. As I can't link that directly I will put all of the content below high lighted in blue.

I know that it is a bit of read, so go ahead and skip to the summery if you aren't interested in my ramblings :)

Blog 1

Hey Guys,

On Friday I told you about how I was now going to be testing the controversial supplement Indigo 3G by Biotest.

Indigo 3G is advertised to the cure for pretty much all physique problems one would experience when on the quest to be a leaner, stronger, faster you. Indigo claims to do the following,

  • Shuttles nutrients to muscle cells instead of fat cells.

  • Decreases the size of fat cells

  • Improves your insulin sensitivity

  • Helps ‘fix’ fat cells making them less likely to grow in the presence of insulin.

Article on Biotests site can be found HERE

This basically means (if true) that you can ingest more calories and carbs than you are now and you will get leaner and more muscular. As a grappler you can imagine how much this interests me.
Now let me state right now that I am totally sceptical of this. Yes the studies have been done, but on mice. This shows promise but that doesn’t mean that it will still have a good carry over to the human body. There are lots of reviews on line stating that this is the next wonder supplement but plenty saying that this is total snake oil.

However what I won’t do is right anything off in nutrition without giving it a go. I’m willing to try it for the potential pay off. I always find it strange how you see these massive long posts and reviews saying how this doesn’t work or that is a con, but when you ask them if they have actually tried it, they haven’t! Surely the best way to have an educated opinion on something is to do the research, try the plan/product and then formulate an opinion on how it works for YOU.

On Friday I started with the dosing protocol of 6 caps first thing on a morning then another 6 caps 40 mins before my workout nutrition at night. So far I haven’t noticed much apart from feeling a little more ‘on’ during a training session but this could easily be a placebo and isn’t quantifiable at all. Some of the things that I will be monitoring throughout this are,

  • Weight

  • Measurements

  • Strength levels

  • Blood sugar.

For the first 7 days I won’t make any changes at all to my nutrition apart from using the Indigo 3G. I want to keepings the same to see if this has any affect directly.

After the first week (providing there hasn’t been any big changes) I will start adding carbs in, in 50g increments. Will start this post workout and go from there. Even though this advertises itself as a wonder supplement I am still going to be very conservative based on my past history with a high carb diet.

As per the carb guide on the Biotest site I am going to add carbs through rice based products. I can’t really see how this will have much of an effect apart from maybe digestion and absorption issues, however I am going to follow things to a ‘T’ for the purpose of this review.
If you have any comments or thoughts, please let me know!

Stay healthy,

Mike

Blog 2

Hey Guys,

How’s everything going?

Hope everyone is making great steps towards their goals and living the life you want!

Todays post is going to be about the product I’m currently testing, Biotests Indigo 3G.

I’m going to talk about how I plan to increase carbs and calories plus what I think about the product over all.

At this point I definitely think the Indigo is doing *something*, although I’m not sure what. I feel tighter and don’t feel bloated at any point (even after my cheat meal). What I have noticed is that my body temp has increased. I feel hotter after eating and training.

With clients I sometimes look for increased heat after certain meals to signal an increase in metabolism. Could this be the case here? Part of the purpose of Indigo is to allow you to take in more calories and send those calories to muscle. This could be what’s happening here.

Or it could be nothing.

One of the things that is recommended is to increase your carb intake as you go along. This is because it is a nutrient partitioning agent (got to give it something to partition).

As I have mentioned in a previous blog I have kept my intake the same for the first week to see if the Indigo has an effect just on its own. From tomorrow I am going to be increasing my intake by 50g (200 cals) on 5/3/1 days

My carb intake on a day where I train twice has looked like this,

  • Wake up – 6 caps Indigo 3G

  • 40 mins later – 1 Biotest Finibar

  • 15 mins before workout – 15g MAG-10, 15g Glycofuse

  • During training – 15g MAG-10, 35g Glycofuse

  • 1 hour later – Meal with protein and fat

  • 2 hours later – Meal with protein and fat

  • 2 hours later – Meal with protein and fat

  • 40 mins before – 6 caps Indigo 3G

  • 15 mins before workout – 15g MAG-10, 15g Glycofuse

  • During training – 15g MAG-10, 15g Glycofuse

  • 1 hour later – Meal with protein and fat

  • 2 hours later – Meal with protein and fat

As you can see its pretty low carb apart from around my training. This is mainly because I historically don’t do well with high carbs (gain fat easily) and do better with a higher fat diet.
That said, with the Indigo 3G I am going to start to add in more carbs. This will look like this

  • Wake up – 6 caps Indigo 3G

  • 40 mins later – 1 Biotest Finibar

  • 15 mins before workout – 15g MAG-10, 15g Glycofuse

  • During training – 15g MAG-10, 35g Glycofuse

  • 1 hour later – Meal with protein 25g carbs

  • 2 hours later – Meal with protein and fat

  • 2 hours later – Meal with protein and fat

  • 40 mins before – 6 caps Indigo 3G

  • 15 mins before workout – 15g MAG-10, 15g Glycofuse

  • During training – 15g MAG-10, 15g Glycofuse

  • 1 hour later – Meal with protein and 25g carbs

  • 2 hours later – Meal with protein and fat

The extra 25g of carbs will be coming through white rice. However since I am also testing Myprotein Protein Crispies so I may have the occasional bowl of these as a breakfast.

I will follow this 4 days a week with 2 being as per the old menu and 1 being a fast (I still like fasts for a bit of a ‘reset’).

I will see how I handle the extra carbs throughout the week then increase by another 50g the following week if everything is ok. I will continue to monitor the following things to ascertain progress,

  • Body weight

  • The mirror

  • Blood Sugar

  • Performance.

If anything jumps up or is massively out of ordinary I will dial it down or make adjustments.
If you have any questions or comments, please post below.

Stay healthy,

Mike

Hey Guys,

So today I have been on Biotests Indigo 3G for 7 days. I don't normally post updates about my product tests but since I have received so many messages about it I thought I would sling up a few thoughts as I go through the test.

Details on The Indigo 3G can be found HERE

Ok, so after being on the product here are a few thoughts,

  • No change nobody weigh or blood sugar. Man report sudden drop in body weight due to water loss. As I keep my water intake pretty high (4 litres plus a day), its no real surprise I haven't lost any.

  • Many people say theory notice an increased work capacity during training. I personally haven't. All I can think is that A) it doesn't work B) it was a placebo effect or C) they weren't using a proper peri workout nutrition plan before using Indigo 3G

  • I have noticed that I have looked a little 'tighter'. I haven't taken any measurements yet this week so again this could be the mirror playing tricks.

I will say that I haven't started to increase carbs yet. I am giving the product a week to get into my system before adding in carbs. More details about my eating plan on Sunday.

If you have any questions, thoughts or comments, please post below or go HERE

Stay healthy,

Mike

Hey Guys,

Thought I would give everyone an update on my current Indigo Experiment.

Truth be told I had a minor hick up and ran out for 4 days before my next batch came through!

As always there is a silver lining to every situation! This allowed me to see how my body would handle the extra carbs with the 'magic' of the Indigo.

The results were quite dramatic! I jumped up 2kg in the 4 days! This could be due to the fact that I had increased carbs again and it was to much for me to handle (I had passed my tollerence for them) or it could be that I had stopped taking the product.

I will say that my weight jumped back down after 2 days of taking it though.

I am going to hold my carbs were they are for this week but increase my calories by increasing my fat intake. I am going to do this for a few reasons,

  1. When looking at my macro numbers I think that my fats may be a little low (need to be a bit higher for correct hormone production etc)

  2. Historically I do better on higher fat diets than carbs and I don't want to over shoot for the comp.

  3. I'm moving house this week and I have some peanut butter that needs eating.

Again, I'm going to making a 200 calorie jump and will reasses everything for the last week going into the comp. I plan to load up a little that week and come in right on the class limit of 68kg (more on this and my comp day stratedgy near the time).

So far my experience of Indigo 3G has been a very positive one. It will be very interesting to push things a bit over Xmas and see if I can add some quality numbers to my weights etc. I will say that I have noticed none of the positive side effects that many have listed (added work capicity, a tingling sensation, feeling more 'anabolic' etc). I can only assume that these were placebo effects from wanting the product to work that badly (it is quite expensive) as they are nothing that can be quantified or measured.

Mike

Hey Guys,

How’s everything going?

Today I thought I would give a mini update on Indigo 3G and what my current thoughts were on the product.

So far the product has allowed me to increase my weight from 64kg to 68kg with very little fat gain (I have taken certain measurements etc but not been homeostatically weighed). I have been able to do this at a steady pace by just increasing my carbs by 50g (200 cals) when my weight gain stopped, which worked out at about every 2 weeks. This worked out perfectly for competing in NESS (North East Submission Series) on Saturday.

I now have been taking Indigo 3G for 1.5 months and have a few thoughts on the product listed below,

  • I feel the product works in increasing your carb tolerance and is a great tool for workout nutrition, but I haven’t experienced any of the other effects that people have listed. To be honest I think they are placebo effects.

  • I think that I could have been a bit more aggressive with the carb increases if I didn’t have a weight class to worry about. For the next few weeks I’m going to push things a bit harder and see what happens.

  • While Biotest sometimes state that you can take the Indigo with some of their products, I have found that it works a lot better if taken on a fully empty stomach.

  • Any kind of flour or gluten is a ‘no-no’, however I’ve had no problem with certain breads that are toasted (I have a theory on toast anyway).

  • Biotest have recently stated that now only 6 caps per day are needed for optimum effects. This seems that either they were conning us before, or we are going to be selling ourselves short with the new dosage. My bet is it’s the first one.

  • I think that a middle ground of 8 caps, split into 2 servings of 4 will be best for me based on what I have seen.

  • For a true evaluation I will have to come off of Indigo or dramatically reduce the dosage to see if it really has the ‘cell fixing’ properties it claims to have.

  • It hasn’t altered my fasted blood glucose, which is a good thing as I was pretty low carb before.

On a more personal note, I have loads coming out soon from print articles to my first E Book (50 Diet tips for Combat Sports) coming out in the new year!

Also there is still time for you to pick up a bargain to start 2014 in the right way. Just head over to the SITE to take a look!

If you have any questions or comments, please post below.

Stay healthy,

Mike

Hey Guys,

Well the comp didn't exactly to plan...

I ended up having 2 fights, finishing one by triangle and losing the other one on points. I went to finish the fight, my opponent defended then capitalised brilliantly to take it on points (you can see my sloppy attempt at an arm bar on the Instagram account @mikeunorthodox). Loads now to work on for the next comp in February!

My team took the team trophy so was all good in the end (I shall live vicariously through their medals).

I'm not going to go on about comp strategy and start to look into my fights in detail on here because to be honest, my skill level doesn't really warrant it. I will say that in the future it would help to actually have a strategy and be more aware of points etc.

However I will talk briefly about how things went with the weigh ins etc. I weighed in at 67.7kg (limit was 68.4kg), so I could have had a little bit more food on the morning before weighing in. After I weighed in I had 500ml water and 2 Biotest Finibars. After 45 mins I was still ravenous so I downed another 2...

I then had my first serving of Biotest Plazma at the start of the rules hearing and I sipped on it till my first fight (about 23-30 mins). After the first fight I started to sip on the other 2 servings of Plazma right up till they called my name and then finished it after the fight.

I felt great in all my fights. Felt quick and strong. Also feel like I have recovered well and was back strength training again this morning with no soreness.

All in all, a fantastic day! Big thanks to the guys at NESS (North East Submission Series) for putting on a great event and everyone who came down to compete and support!

Stay healthy,

Mike

As you can see, that's quite a bit of info! So what's the conclusion?

Well in short the product worked. It allowed me to take in nearly double the amount of carbs that I have ever done before and not get fat in the process. Because of the carbs I was able to workout harder, longer and made great gains in strength and felt brilliant on the mat. I will be continuing to take take it as staple for me as I really do think it has a benefit. i am very interested to see how it helps when I'm leaning down for the BJJ British Open later this year!

Ok, now a couple of negatives on the product.

It is not a miracle pill that will allow you to turn into a muscular god and eat hamburgers all day. Smart, calculated nutrition must be used! Also many people that reviewed the product on the Biotest US site reported many other benefits like added energy, larger work capacity, a longer muscular pump and many others. I did not experience any of this (nor does Biotest claim you will).

The price is a little high. This is based on how much the product costs to source and produce (just try googling cyanidin-3 glucoside and try to buy some). This is not a cheap product. However if you have EVERYTHING else dialled in then it may make a big difference to you.

Would I recommend it to a client? Well I wouldn't put it directly on a nutrition plan, but if a client asked me if it was good to take, I would tell them that it was (as long as it fitted their budget after other essentials had been taken care of).

All in all, a great product that is worthwhile taking. Just make sure you have real world expectations (same as any supplement)!

Stay Healthy,

Mike

Interview with Prep Coach john Meadows - Part 1

 Hey Guys,

Today I am re sharing an interview I did with John Meadows. This is one of the most popular blogs I have ever done and for good reason! John is one of the best in the business and his thoughts on anything to do with Nutrition are well worth listening to!

Mike: Hi John, can just tell people a bit about yourself really if they are not familiar on your work on T-Nation.com and with the website itself mountaindog.com. Tell us a bit about yourself and your unique approach to nutrition where a lot of people differ with being more health-based.

John: I’ve been around a long time and I’ve had a corporate job for a long time. I left that job a couple of years ago. People have really just started to hear about me in the last three to four years but the truth is, I’ve been around for a long time. I was just one of those guys that would compete once a year and then I would disappear just because of my work responsibilities. I didn’t really have time for much else. I actually started in this industry when I was back early in my teenage years. I actually started competing when I was 13 years old, which is pretty silly when I think back about it. I see this kids now that are 13 years old and I think wow, I was in a body-building show when I was that age. That just seems crazy.

Mike: Yeah, you were a kid yourself.

John: I used to be just a super sponge with this stuff. I remember when I was 13 years old, I remember watching the 1985 Mr. Olympia and I could tell you the placings. It was Haney, Beckles, Gaspari, Makkawy, Mike Christian, Barry de May, Tom Platz, Sergio Oliva, Bob Parris and Frank Richard. That was the top ten. I remember I watched them on my VHS player. I recorded it. Obviously, I watched it over and over and over and I was really inspired. I wanted to look like those guys. I didn’t really know what it took. I would just save up money and if I didn’t have the money, I would go to the store and sit on the floor in the aisle and read the magazines. I really enjoyed it.

I kept training. I was in a lot of sports in high school. I ran track. I played football. I was in wrestling up to a certain point. I gave that up because I didn’t like rolling around on the mat with another sweaty guy. It just lost its appeal to me after a while. I continued into my teenage years. I went to college. I continued to compete. When I was 19 years old, I won my first really good title. I’ll never forget that. I was in college and I didn’t have any money. The guy that was helping me worked for John Parillo. I’m not sure if you are familiar with John Parillo. He was a really, really big name. He is still around. He was a really big name back then in the industry. He is the guy that really brought on the whole fascia stretching stuff. Whether you agree with it or not, he’s the guy that brought that up.

John’s guy had a connection with a food market, so he would bring me boxes of tuna and essentially what I ate for my first contest was tuna, bags of lettuce and an occasional sweet potato.

Mike: Well balanced…

John: (Laughs) Yeah, well balanced. I’m lucky I didn’t die! It was brutal. It was the worst contest diet. It was absolutely brutal. I remember in between every single class at college I went to sleep. I just got back to my room and went to sleep. I was so tired. I ended up winning the show and I was ridiculously lean but not having money made those choices pretty simple for me. I didn’t have the luxury of having filets or all the other things I eat now. I had to keep it really, really simple. Then, of course, when the show was over, I made the classic mistake that everybody else makes. I remember saving some money and going down fast food row here and going from burger joint to burger joint to pizza joint. I don’t even know if I saved money for it. I probably used my credit card. I probably maxed out my credit card in one night.

I remember gaining 30-35 pounds in two days, which is just a ridiculously stupid thing. A lot of the things that I do, Mine are a result of the mistakes that I’ve made along the way. I look at all of the mistakes I’ve made and I try to learn from them and I try to incorporate that into my plans so that other people don’t make those same, dumb mistakes. I continued to complete through my 20’s and here I am. I am 41 now. The last three contests I’ve done, I’ve gotten second place on all three of them. I keep just barely just missing that pro card. That’s okay, it just pushes you to get better.

Here I am now. Like I said three or four years ago I really started getting my views out there. I started thinking a lot more about my philosophies and trying to tie it together. In terms of nutrition, It was in a situation where I got really sick in 2005 and I almost died from a vascular disease I had in my large intestine and that forced me to take a really deep look at the digestive system. I had some time in the hospital and then when I got out of the hospital, it was six months actually before I ended up going back to work because of various issues I kept having. I spent a lot of time just going back to the drawing board and trying to re-learn nutrition. Were my methods good, bad or whatever? I found a lot of holes in my way of thinking. I tried to educate myself.

I was one of those guys that wouldn’t eat fat. I thought cholesterol and an egg yolk was bad for you. I was exactly one of those guys. I’m embarrassed to say it but I was. I also had probably a superman complex where I felt I could go out and pig out on fast food, eat a ton and really the way to get really big was to just shove as many calories in your as you could at no regard. I do agree that sometimes you have to go on calorie overload and your metabolism wants that. That was just my philosophy in general. I just wanted to shove hamburgers and French fries down and have caloric excess and I can grow. That might have something to do to with digestive stress (laughs).

In terms of training, training is what I really, really enjoy. It’s the same story. I’ve made a lot of mistakes. I’ve trained in a lot of different techniques. I’ve trained under some extremely smart people. I’ve had some great coaches. The things that I think work really well now, a lot of them are not typical. You take training sequence, sequence of your exercises. I never hear anybody talk about that. In my opinion, that should be one of the biggest cornerstones or foundations of your training routine. There are certain exercises that you could do at certain points of time that are advantageous and the big thing is I look at this now, now that I’m in my 40’s from a longevity perspective. How am I going to be able to train hard for a long period of time without injuring myself? It’s a big deal. I can tell you that if I go into the gym and I do what a lot of these people say, which is to bench press first, squat first, then lift first, I can tell you that I start pulling things and I start suffering injuries.

It’s not a matter of training scared. It’s a matter of training intelligently. If you are a power lifter, you are concerned about getting the weight from point A to point B, if you are a body builder, you are concerned about placing tension on a muscle period. I find that for example, if you do a bench press second or third, you’re not going to be as strong because you are going to be a little fatigued, but your muscles are going to get the tension. You tendon and ligaments aren’t going to take the beating. I have a lot of people, they hear about my routines and how hard they are and how brutal they are but then they tell me, “Oh, my God, my joints feel better than they have ever felt. My joints feel awesome.”

That’s music to my ears because that’s one of my goals is to keep people healthy. There are a lot of things about training too I just really enjoy, I really like talking about. That’s just one example. I know that’s a very long-winded answer to your question.

Mike: No, no it leads us really next to some more stuff. One of the reasons I really wanted to talk to you, obviously, the majority of the people who read this site are combat athletes mostly. They are just grapplers, wrestlers etc. One of the things that is very neglected I think in the sport overall is health. You mentioned before, I know you are very big on getting your blood checked regularly, your cholesterol, triglycerides and everything like that. Many people ignore it completely in combat sports as a whole. I was hoping to get a bit of your uptake on what is the minimum that people should be looking at, say every six months, every 12 months to be getting checked so they are keeping within that healthy bracket? They love the sport, exactly the same as body builders and want to be doing it for as long as possible and this is the thing that no one is getting checked. It’s one of the things I think is really going to come around and bite them in the ass later on. I was hoping to get a bit of your view on the minimum people should be keeping an eye on this as they are going through the training.

John: Absolutely, I typically like to have people get their labs done every six months. Some of the things we are looking for, when I hear the term cholesterol, let me just give you my perspective on cholesterol. I will put a disclaimer out here and say that I’m not a doctor, I’m not an expert but I am entitled to my opinion so here is my opinion. My opinion is that the total cholesterol is a pretty meaningless number. I followed a lot of Uffe Ravnskov’s work. He wrote The Cholesterol Myths and I have followed some other people too, Malcolm Kendrick and some other pretty smart people but based on what I’ve read with people with an IQ that is 10,000 times higher than mine, that total cholesterol number doesn’t seem to mean a whole lot.

People get worried about anything that goes over 200. There is actually a lot of data out there that shows lower cholesterol people have a higher mortality rate than people with higher cholesterol, particularly with older women. There is a direct correlation as their cholesterol numbers lower, they are at more risk. Anyway, I don’t really put too much into that. Then you get into HDL and LDL, lipoproteins. That’s another really, really gray area right now. The traditional thinking has always been that a high HDL is good and I think there probably is something to that, if you look at what it is measuring. LDL is the one that is really, really tricky because we have heard a lot of different things. We have heard that really you have to look at the particle size, these small particles are more dangerous and can get lodged in your arteries and the larger, more buoyant, fluffy particles are like beach balls. They just bounce around. They don’t really do any damage.

There is a school of thought that says particle size is very important and you can get that checked in your labs. Not every lab place will do that but it’s very easy to get done here. I have all my people get it done. Then you’ve got another part of this, another school of thought that is the LDL oxidized or not. You can check somebody’s antioxidant status and you want somebody’s antioxidant status to be good because they are probably going to oxidize less cholesterol. There are actually some pretty cool studies out there with vitamin E. A couple of years ago, I heard about Red Palm Oil. It’s one of these tropical oils, like Coconut Oil that people were really scared for a while, “Oh my God, all the saturated fat” but Red Palm Oil has a really unique blend of vitamin E. It has all the tocotrienol, tocopherol and it has all those things. If you go out to Pub Med and you type in Red Palm Oil and LDL oxidation, you will see some real cool studies that show a reduction in oxidation.

There is a lot of gray area. I’m not sure that I would worry too much about LDL still at this point. The thing that I have always been taught was that the ratios I look at are a little different than most people. What I have always been taught is that your HDL needs to be high and your triglycerides need to be low. Those are the two factors that you really want to look at. Triglycerides, to me, seem like a really big deal. The nice thing about triglycerides is you can control it very easily with your diet, specifically with your carbohydrate intake. You lower your carbs a little bit, clean them up and you will see your triglycerides will lower.

Of course, you’ve always got genetic issue where no matter what people do they are going to be at risk. I’m not addressing that but generally speaking what I like to see is lower triglycerides and higher HDL. If you get those two things in order, I’m not going to promise you that you will live to be 100 but seems like the odds stack up in your favor in terms of longevity. I also tell people to not freak out and worry about this stuff constantly because you know what the worst thing in life is in terms of killing you? Stress. It really is.

We’re built to handle bouts of stress. We’ve got this fight or flight thing that we have that handles that pretty well, but what we are not meant to handle is these constant low-grade levels of stress. Does my wife love me anymore? Am I going to be able to make my house payment this weekend? Should I go bail my kid out of jail? These just are just constant levels of stress.

To me, that’s what does more damage to people than anything. The number one thing I tell people is if you want to improve your health, first of all let’s start figuring out ways to reduce your stress. As silly as that sounds, it makes a big difference to me.

Mike: Talking about stress and things like that, which management is a big thing, again, it’s a neglected thing for everybody I think when reducing stress and just relaxing really and not taking ourselves too seriously. One of the things I read about or it was on one of your podcasts back when you were lowering your own cholesterol and taking a closer look at your own blood is about how much you improved your own blood work. One of the things you talked about was how previously you had a very low fat diet but then now you have a good quality fat at the right time in your client’s diet and your own. One of the things I would like to talk about that obviously is how it helps reduce inflammation in the body that you brought up previously. You mentioned briefly exercise selection and sequence, which helped me. I recently had shoulder surgery, so any kind of overhead pressing but when I sequenced it, it helps me out tremendously, so thank you.

Part 2 coming next week!

Stay Healthy,

Mike
