Product Review - Myprotein Impact Whey

 Hey Guys,

This weeks product review is on MyProteins Impact Whey Protein.

As everyone knows, having a good amount of protein in a nutrition plan is a good idea (my clients normally range from 1-2g per pound of body weight).

However some people struggle to eat that amount of solid protein or have difficulty fitting the meals into such a busy schedule. This is where protein shakes come in.

Protein shakes are pretty much the first supplement everyone tries. Even after the initial disappointment of not turning into Arnie after the first shake, they stick with them. Now the world of protein shakes is a murky one with many different types that propose to do all sorts of weird and wonderful things.

Most of these are complete crap.

However having a good, nutritionally sound, well priced protein shake is pretty much a must for any athlete or gym goer. So what to get? What is best and what is crap? Well unfortunately the scope of such a guide is beyond this product review. Instead, here is a protein that I recommend to  quite a lot of UK clients as a good, all round protein.

ImpactWhey Protein by MyProtein.

Here is what the folks over at MyProtein had to say about it.

Our bestselling protein powder, Impact Whey Protein™ is produced using only premium grade whey protein concentrate, delivering a massive 82% protein content. If you’re looking for a premium quality whey protein powder which delivers exceptional value for money and incredible taste, look no further than Impact Whey Protein™ is a rich source of whey protein concentrate from vegetarian sweet cheese, sourced directly from the world’s leading whey protein manufacturers. Having the highest Biological Value (BV) of any known protein, whey protein concentrate contains high levels of both essential and non-essential Amino Acids.

The manufacturing process utilises a unique combination of membrane filtration technology and drying at low temperature and pressure. This ensures gentle separation and concentration of the protein and retains its natural function and high nutritional value to give a high quality whey protein concentrate.

Our Impact Whey Protein™ provides over 82g of protein per 100g (dry basis), is low in fat and lactose and rich in calcium. This protein is an excellent source of essential amino acids and contains one of the highest proportions of branched chain amino acids found in natural protein.

Traceability is a key part of our quality monitoring process and to aid this process we work directly with the world’s leading whey manufacturers to ensure we have complete knowledge and confidence in the production process of our whey protein.

The protein fractions are: 44% Beta lactoglobulin, 17% Alpha lactalbumin, 1.5% Bovine serum albumin, 8% Immunoglobulin G, 0.5% Lactoferrin, 26% Glycomacropeptide.

Sounds good! So what is the nutritional information like? Let's take a look,

Per 25g:
Energy: 98.3Kcal
Energy: 414.0kJ
Protein (dry basis): 20.5g
Protein (as-is): 19.6g
Fat: 1.7g
Carbohydrates: 1.5g
Calcium: 125.0mg
Cholesterol: 0.5mg

That's pretty much the same as 100g of chicken breast.

I honestly have nothing bad to say about this product. It mixes well, tastes great (my fav is choc smooth), is available in loads of flavours and is nutritionally sound. I normally prefer to use this in recipes when trialling other products but it's great as a stand alone item.

It also starts from as little as £12.79 per KG, which is an absolute bargainas some companies are charging £40 plus for a KG!

If you're looking for a good quality protein, you won't go far wrong with this!

Stay healthy,

Mike

Product Review - Myprotein Peptopro

Protein.

Everyone uses it, everyone knows that it's important in your diet.

It helps you recover and repair muscle and other issues that allow you to get bigger, stronger and faster.

The problem is what type do you use and when? there are that many that are out there at the moment it is just so confusing for everyone (see my next article in JiuJitsu Style for more info).

For this review I want to talk about a fast acting protein from Myprotein called Peptopro.

Peptopro is a VERY fast acting protein. Basically the protein has been made more bio available by making the protein molecules smaller and more easily digestible.

This means that it is broken down into aminos nearly straight away and shuttled off to your muscles and organs near instantaneously. This is exactly what we want around training! Your muscles are crying out for nutrients and are in the perfect state to soak them up.
Give them what they need!

Here what Myprotein had to say about Peptopro,

PeptoPro® is a pre-digested protein that is completely water soluble and contains > 60% unique hypo-allergenic di- and tri peptides. These peptides are absorbed much faster than any in-tact protein or even single amino acids. The instant delivery of these "building blocks" to the tissues kick starts the building phase, resulting in very fast recovery and increased growth.

A multitude of testimonials from satisfied consumers demonstrates the clear & noticeable effects of PeptoPro®: Reduced soreness and fatigue, faster recovery, increased endurance and also a bigger pump during and after work-outs.

The benefits of PeptoPro® have not gone unnoticed by the sporting elite; it is used by many top sports teams, professional athletes and regular gym enthusiasts and is widely regarded as the cutting edge protein.

PeptoPro® is supported by multiple scientific and human studies. It has been proven to increase endurance, accelerate recovery and boost protein synthesis during and after exercise.
PeptoPro® has a degree of hydrolysation of 28%.

Instant Amino Acid Delivery to Kick-Start the Building Phase

After exercise you have a short window of opportunity where the muscle cells remain open to let nutrients in. PeptoPro® delivers amino acids quicker than any other protein source, which kick-starts the building phase so you can reap the maximum benefit from every workout.

Because PeptoPro® is made from casein, it contains all the amino acids in an optimum ratio for human health and performance. Casein is also one of the purest protein sources available, which is why PeptoPro® is practically fat and lactose free.

Boosts Blood Sugar Levels:

PeptoPro® significantly increases glycogen levels, resulting in a better utilization of glucose and amino acids by the cells. In fact, the simultaneous delivery of amino acids provides the perfect foundation for post exercise recovery and lean growth.

You can read more at the official website: www.peptopro.com

Here is the nutritional information,

Per 20g:
Energy: 73.0Kcal
Energy: 305KJ
Protein (as-is): 17.0g
Carbohydrates: 0.0g
Fat: 0.3g

Sounds good right? So how did it handle in practice?

I have to admit that I am a fan of this product. I used it personally for quite a while and it did wonders for my recovery. I'm talking no soreness, better training and more results.

It mixes great and quickly with large and smaller volumes of water and the berry flavour tastes great (never get the unflavoured as it tastes like death).

I have had many clients use it from people just swatting out right through to UFC fighters and world champs. Its a great product!

By far one of the best workout proteins I have used.

As always however nothing is perfect, here are a couple of flaws with the product,
  • It doesn't mix well with other products. This poses a problem when I would add a carb powder or other supplement to it. Not ideal.
  • The bags used to be larger for the same price. When they downsized the bag they effectively doubled the price. This led me to use exclusively MAG 10 instead.
That's it really. Not much in the way of downsides. The product itself is great and I still use it for a number of clients where I don't want to add extra carbs at certain points of their day. For me however, I will be sticking with other products till they change the price or the bag size.

Mike

Product Review - Myprotein Omega 3

Hey Guys,

Today I am talking about MyProteins Omega 3 Fish Oil.

Regular readers of my articles and this blog will know how passionate I am about athletes (especially grapplers and fighters) taking fish oil to improve their performance and recovery. It is one of the very few supplements that will actually give you a noticeable difference in how you feel and perform (especially if your joints ache).

In the past I have reviewed other fish oil which you can find HERE

If you do not know the many benefits of fish oil, then I suggest that you Google it right now!

Fish oil is a great tool to help you recover and take care of your health. Fish oil is a good type of fatty acid that most of us lack in out diets.

Here is what MyProtein have to say about it,

What is Omega 3?

Omega 3 is an essential fatty acid (EFA) that we find in the diet from sources of oily fish such as salmon, mackrel and sardines. Being essential, means that omega-3 is vital for normal bodily function, however can not be synthesised by the body and must be consumed through the diet.

Benefits of omega 3:

The essential fatty acids consumed in the diet are made up of EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) which are both long chain fatty acids that have been shown to contribute to the normal function of the heart. In the Uk it is recommended we consume at the minimum 1 portion of oily fish a week to recieve adequate sources of omega-3. However, intakes are well below this whereby a supplement such as Myprotein omega-3 can help meet the established omega-3 recommendations and also be highly beneficial to your nutritional status.

Suitable for:

Ideal for any individual who wants to comsume a balanced diet, boost omega 3 intake and gain optimum cardiovascular health and well being.

Sounds good!

So what are the ingredients and Nutritional breakdown?

Omega 3 Fish Oil (18% EPA, 12% DHA), Softgel (Gelatin, Glycerin), Purified Water,Vitamin E (DL-Alpha Tocopherol Acetate).
Free from artificial colours & preservatives, yeast, gluten, starch & lactose. No added salt (sodium chloride) or sugar. GMO free.

Amount per 2 softgel serving:
EPA (18%): 360mg
DHA (12%): 240mg

Ok so this doesn't look to bad at all for a standard fish oil. But are there any alternatives?

Well ASDA have an own brand fish oil that has 260mg of EPA/DHA per capsule. This means that it has 520mg per 2 capsule (as opposed to MyProteins 600mg).

The price of the two fish oils is the same (about £10 for 250 capsules) so you are better off with theMyProtein version as it has an extra 100mg per 2 capsules!

I had no issues at all when taking these. I take quite a high dose (8 caps per day) to help with grip recovery for NJJ and not once had an issue. The capsules are easy to swallow and have no taste. A great buy that really helps mine and my clients recovery!

You can get the Omega 3 from MyProtein for £9.79 for 250 capsules

Stay healthy,

Mike
