Product Review - Myprotein Impact Whey

 Hey Guys,

This weeks product review is on MyProteins Impact Whey Protein.

As everyone knows, having a good amount of protein in a nutrition plan is a good idea (my clients normally range from 1-2g per pound of body weight).

However some people struggle to eat that amount of solid protein or have difficulty fitting the meals into such a busy schedule. This is where protein shakes come in.

Protein shakes are pretty much the first supplement everyone tries. Even after the initial disappointment of not turning into Arnie after the first shake, they stick with them. Now the world of protein shakes is a murky one with many different types that propose to do all sorts of weird and wonderful things.

Most of these are complete crap.

However having a good, nutritionally sound, well priced protein shake is pretty much a must for any athlete or gym goer. So what to get? What is best and what is crap? Well unfortunately the scope of such a guide is beyond this product review. Instead, here is a protein that I recommend to  quite a lot of UK clients as a good, all round protein.

ImpactWhey Protein by MyProtein.

Here is what the folks over at MyProtein had to say about it.

Our bestselling protein powder, Impact Whey Protein™ is produced using only premium grade whey protein concentrate, delivering a massive 82% protein content. If you’re looking for a premium quality whey protein powder which delivers exceptional value for money and incredible taste, look no further than Impact Whey Protein™ is a rich source of whey protein concentrate from vegetarian sweet cheese, sourced directly from the world’s leading whey protein manufacturers. Having the highest Biological Value (BV) of any known protein, whey protein concentrate contains high levels of both essential and non-essential Amino Acids.

The manufacturing process utilises a unique combination of membrane filtration technology and drying at low temperature and pressure. This ensures gentle separation and concentration of the protein and retains its natural function and high nutritional value to give a high quality whey protein concentrate.

Our Impact Whey Protein™ provides over 82g of protein per 100g (dry basis), is low in fat and lactose and rich in calcium. This protein is an excellent source of essential amino acids and contains one of the highest proportions of branched chain amino acids found in natural protein.

Traceability is a key part of our quality monitoring process and to aid this process we work directly with the world’s leading whey manufacturers to ensure we have complete knowledge and confidence in the production process of our whey protein.

The protein fractions are: 44% Beta lactoglobulin, 17% Alpha lactalbumin, 1.5% Bovine serum albumin, 8% Immunoglobulin G, 0.5% Lactoferrin, 26% Glycomacropeptide.

Sounds good! So what is the nutritional information like? Let's take a look,

Per 25g:
Energy: 98.3Kcal
Energy: 414.0kJ
Protein (dry basis): 20.5g
Protein (as-is): 19.6g
Fat: 1.7g
Carbohydrates: 1.5g
Calcium: 125.0mg
Cholesterol: 0.5mg

That's pretty much the same as 100g of chicken breast.

I honestly have nothing bad to say about this product. It mixes well, tastes great (my fav is choc smooth), is available in loads of flavours and is nutritionally sound. I normally prefer to use this in recipes when trialling other products but it's great as a stand alone item.

It also starts from as little as £12.79 per KG, which is an absolute bargainas some companies are charging £40 plus for a KG!

If you're looking for a good quality protein, you won't go far wrong with this!

Stay healthy,

Mike

Product Review - Myprotein Whey Isolate

Hey Guys,

Today I am reviewing Myproteins Whey Isolate

As regular readers of the product section will know I recently reviewed the standard Impact Whey from Myprotein and loved it. It was a great tasting whey that did the job for a great price.

However Myprotein also do a faster acting whey isolate for when you need a shake to be absorbed much faster (i.e. post training or when using protein pulses). I personally like faster acting whey as I think that it has more uses than standard whey.

Here is what Myprotein had to say about it,

What is Impact Whey Isolate?

Impact Whey Isolate is the purest whey protein available, containing over 90% protein with a low fat (0.25g) and carbohydrate (0.17g) content per serving, which is lower than most other whey protein powders. It has a comprehensive amino acid profile providing all the essential amino acids (EAA's) and has over 2g of Leucine per serving.

Impact Whey Protein Benefits

Impact Whey Isolate is ideal for anyone looking to increase daily protein intake or looking for a protein intake before or after a training session. Due to the high protein content (22g per serving) it will contribute to a growth and maintenance of muscle mass. Impact Whey Isolate is available in a range of delicious flavours including a variety of natural flavours.

Who is Impact Whey Isolate Suitable for?

Impact Whey Isolate is ideal for anyone looking to increase daily protein intake. Whey protein isolate is ideal for individuals with goals of muscle gain, weight loss and muscle recovery.
Here is the nutritional information,
Per 25g:
Energy: 92.5cal
Energy: 393.3kJ
Protein (dry basis): 23.0g
Protein (as-is): 22.25g
Fat: 0.25g
Carbohydrates: 0.17g
Calcium: 100.0mg
Cholesterol: 0.5mg
Please note this nutritional information is taken from the unflavoured version. When choosing a flavoured version it will reduce the protein content by approximately 3% for most flavours, however chocolate, due to the added cocoa, will reduce it by approximately 8%.
And the ingredients,
Undenatured Whey Protein Isolate*, Cocoa Powder (chocolate flavours only), Flavouring (flavoured options only), Natural Flavouring (natural options only), Citric Acid (raspberry flavour only), Emulsifier (Soy Lecithin), Sweetener (Sucralose® [flavoured options only]), Colourings (Beetroot Red [raspberry, strawberry cream, blackcurrant and apple & raspberry flavours only], Anthocyanin [raspberry flavour only], Curcumin [banana flavour only], Carotenes [Orange & Passion fruit flavour]). *From Milk
Natural Flavours Whey Protein Isolate*, Cocoa Powder (natural chocolate flavour only), Natural Flavouring (natural options only), Colourings (Beetroot Red [natural strawberry flavour only], Curcumin [natural banana flavour only]), Sweetener (Sucralose®), Emulsifier (Soy Lecithin). *From Milk
Ok so what are we looking at?
The main difference between this and standard whey is that it is a purer form of protein with a better Amino Acid profile. What this means for real world application is that it can be converted into more building blocks for your muscles allowing better recovery and repair (less soreness, bigger muscles, more strength).
I found this product easy to use and really tasty. It mixed quickly and easily without the need for a blender or shaker ball. This means that it's great for travelling and using for snacks. I found that the product sat well in the stomach without any upsets or bloating, even when used during a workout as well as before and after.
The product is low calorie, high protein and very low carb making it very versatile as it can be easily to other foods like oats or for recipes.
It's even pretty cheap to at just under £20 per KG and can be purchased HERE

Stay healthy,
Mike

Product Review - Grenade Hydra 6 Whey Isolate

Hi Guys,

Today I will be reviewing Grenade Hydra 6 Whey Isolate.

Here is what Grenade had to say about it,

Hydra 6™ has been formulated with the ultimate form of whey protein - Whey Protein Isolate - and the ultimate form of casein - Ultrafiltered Micellar Casein - in the perfect “50/50” ratio. Hydra 6™ offers the versatility and convenience of not having to buy two separate proteins for different times of the day and is designed to feed your muscles with the highest quality protein available.
Hard training individuals need “fast acting” whey protein isolate in the morning and pre / post workout and “slow release” casein protein before bedtime and at other times when protein won’t be consumed for several hours. Protein contributes to growth* and maintenance# in muscle mass.

And the Ingredients list,

ALLERGY ADVICE:
Also may contain Cereals containing Gluten, Egg and Peanuts.
Suitable for Vegetarians

Ok so let's talk about whether it's any good!

Firstly the name is ridiculous and the language that is used in the product description puts me off straight away. As most readers will know I like straight talking and facts when it comes to supplements.

That being said this is a pretty good, every day protein. It mixes well and tastes fine. I like the fact that it has both Whey isolate and Micellar Casein, which it gives it a steady, slow release effect which is what you want in a protein powder that isn't used around a workout. This would be great in recipes or as a stand alone shake as a snack or meal replacement.

the carbs are a touch on the high side for a plain protein and it will not be fast acting enough to be used as pre, intra, or post workout nutrition. However the product isn't advertised as a diet whey or for the use of workout support (so I guess I'm splitting hairs).

Not my first choice but a decent protein.

Grenade Hydra 6 Ultra Premium costs £27.99 for a 908g tub and can be bought HERE

Mike

Product Review - The Protein Works Diet Whey Isolate 97

Hey Guys,

Today I am reviewing The Protein Works Diet Whey Isolate 97.

The Protein Works Diet Whey Isolate 97 is a whey protein isolate that is low in carbs with a high protein content. Here is what they had to say about it,

Diet Whey Isolate 97

Diet Whey Isolate 97 is the purest whey protein isolate, renowned for having the highest protein content and lowest carbohydrate and fat content of any protein in sports nutrition today. It is designed specifically for anyone dieting or looking to decrease their calorie intake. Diet Whey Isolate 97 now includes ground-breaking patented enzyme technology, AMINOGEN® to further enhance its unique formulation.
Diet Whey Isolate 97 has less than 1g of fat and less than 1g of carbohydrates per serving. Sourced from premium grade whey protein isolate, it has an excellent amino acid profile. Diet Whey Isolate 97 uses membrane technology to create an ultra pure form of whey protein with its lactose, carbs, calories and casein removed.

AMINOGEN® Patented Enzyme System

All TPW™ products are designed using the very latest sports nutrition research and technology. Best-selling Diet Whey Isolate 97 is no different. Diet Whey Isolate 97 is now formulated with the breakthrough patented enzyme system, AMINOGEN®. This revolutionary system is plant-based and allergen free, demonstrating once again our commitment to developing the most advanced sports nutrition formulas on the market today.
The ultimate value of any protein supplement is in its amino acid composition. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. For a protein to be usable in the body, it must first be broken down into shorter amino acid chains. So when you take a protein supplement, the body gets to work breaking down the long protein chains into shorter digestible chains for use in physiological processes such as growth and repair.

Diet Whey Isolate 97 Key Features

This ultra pure protein undergoes a unique manufacturing process whereby the protein is extracted directly from skimmed milk using membrane technologies at low temperature through two processes known as microfiltration and ultrafiltration. This ultimately produces a very pure form of whey protein that's had its lactose, carbohydrates, calories and casein removed. This leaves ultra pure whey protein isolate, a protein that is the ultimate in purity.

And here is the nutritional and ingredient information,

Doesn't look to bad at all. At first glance it is a pretty average protein of this type with low carbs and fat, medium protein and normal amount of calories for this type of product. Although the company claim a very high quality to their products I'm a little put off by the lack of protein and BCAA break downs and a lack of nutritional information on 'Aminogen' (which alone sounds like a supplement buzz word which puts me off).

The packaging looks great (if you care about such a thing) and the service was pretty quick. The problems started when I attempted to have a shake...

I opted for the Rocky Road flavour as I like sweeter shakes and I thought the wife might also like it. As soon as I added water the problems started. The protein clumped pretty much straight away and became very lumpy with no amount of shaking removing the clumps (I never use a blender when making my shakes as I think protein shakes should be a portable protein source). When I plucked up the courage to try a sip, the taste was even worse than the look of the shake. It had a mixture of chemical and cough syrup taste that lasted for ages in the back of my mouth.

I then tried the shake with more and less water to see if that was a factor. It wasn't. The shake simply would not mix well and tasted terrible.

I would not recommend this to any client.

Diet Whey Isolate is available HERE and costs £28.99 per KG

Stay Healthy,

Mike
