Subf15teen

Well Guys, it's that time again!

It's finally here and tomorrow is the fantastic Subf15teen event held at the Marton Country Club and will be showcasing some of the best fighters in the UK!

I have been fortunate to be part of the event right from the start, sponsoring every event. It's a great show that just seems to grow from straight to strength. This isn't just because of the fantastic fighters it has on it's cards or the great prizes the fighters get for winning (yes actual prizes, not just 50p medals), but because of the way that the show treats its fighters. This is something that most BJJ comps need to take a lesson from.

The fighters must come first!

It is because the show takes such good care of its fighters that they can put together amazing cards and fights that the fans will love.

I mean just look at a few of the fights that are happening tomorrow,

Arya Esfandmaz vs. Ross Nicholls
Alain Guerra Pozo vs. Shaun Matthews
David Morcegao vs. Jim Notini
Sean McDonagh vs. Peter Youds
4 Man Blue Belt Title Belt Tournament
Ladies Title Belt Tournament

Plus loads of other world class fighters. I really can't think of a better format for BJJ and NoGI in Britain.

If you haven't got a ticket you can still get them HERE

Also for those travelling there is also a deal for cheap hotel rooms HERE

I'll be floating round the event so make sure that you pop over and say Hi!

Coaches and who you should listen to.

Hey Guys,

The other day a friend posted this article on his Facebook wall.

I am a fan of the site and the author so I read the article. After reading it I concluded that I agreed with pretty much everything the author said with a few minor objections.

I then started to write this post.

I wrote out a long and detailed post about how (especially in combat sports) people need to pick their coaches and trainers wisely.

It seems that everyone is now an MMA or BJJ coach and I even bet that your local gym has a few classes along these lines. it seems like every PT in the land is now an expert on how you can get 'MMA conditioning' or are Strength and Conditioning Experts.

I even wrote a big bit about how I thought that some of it applied to me and how results speak for themselves.

I however deleted it all and wrote this instead.

Yes people pretend to be something that they are not. Yes people try to get your money from you for things they have no experience in. And it's your fault.

That's right, it's YOUR fault.

If people did the correct amount of research and asked the right questions then all of this Mickey Mouse trainer bullshit wouldn't happen. People would get found out for the frauds they are and have to go actually learn the craft before getting clients in it.

Coaching is a skill set and it is your job to make sure that you get the right person for you. Not every PT can help you achieve every goal (just like no nutritionist knows all sports).

We need to be careful who we give access to helping us achieve out dreams.

Do the research!

New way to get a Nutrition Plan!

Hey Guys,

As some of you will have seen earlier this week, the website has had a bit of a face lift!

One of the new added functions of the site is that you can now spread the cost of a longer plan (6 and 12 months) into a monthly payment via PayPal.

Now if you're like many of the many fighters that I work with, chances are that you fight quite often (many BJJ athletes fight nearly every week!). Because of this they have to keep a close eye not only on their weight, but also their performance.

What many fighters and athletes choose to do is to take a longer plan and have me look after their nutrition full time (no joke, 24/7). However in some cases paying for a long term plan simply isn't feasible due to having to pay for it all in one lump sum.

What you can do now however, is to spread the cost of a plan every month via paypal. The payment comes from your paypal account automatically and I take care of all your nutrition needs.

Here are just some of the features that having a full time plan include (also included in 4, 6 and 12 week plans),
  • A full evaluation of your lifestyle and training.
  • Full, individual nutrition plan of what to eat and when.
  • 24/7 support from me for any questions and quires.
  • Bi weekly check ins and weekly evaluations to keep you moving toward your goals.
Simply click HERE to see the full range of plans.

Product Reviews

Hey Guys,

Today I want to talk about Product Reviews.

As some of you will know I do regular product reviews (which you can read HERE) on the website

What I am after is a list of things that you guys would like to see reviewed. There is no point me reviewing random things that has no carry over to what any of you are looking at using.

So what do you want to know about?

What crazy stuff have you seen advertised that has gained your interest?

What stuff out there has such incredible claims or reviews that you think might change the game for you?

Or is there anything out there that just seems that stupid you want to see someone take it?

Guest Post for Roll Supreme

Hey Guys,

Today I wanted to share with you a gust post I did for my friends over at Roll Supreme.

Take a look!

What to eat for training.

This is always going to be one of the most asked questions on any forum, Facebook page or in the gym.

What should I eat before training?

To answer this question you need to look at a few others like,
  • ·      What are my exact goals?
  • ·      Have I got a competition coming up?
  • ·      What does my recovery look like?
  • ·      Am I cutting weight?
  • ·      Did I train already today?
  • ·      Did I train yesterday?
  • ·      Will I train again or tomorrow?

To be honest the list could go on quite a bit!

While most people are very serious about their training, they aren’t trying to win Gold medals 100% of the time. For the purpose of this post I’m going to assume that you are the same as 90% of people and you,

·      Work 9-5
·      Train in the evenings
·      Aren’t in competition training
·      Just want to have productive sessions and recover well.

I am not going to look at a full days nutrition as that is a very long post in itself! Here I am going to look at specifically what to eat pre, during and post training to make sure that you get the most out of your training and recover optimally.

The following recommendations are based on a person that is eating a well thought out nutrition plan and isn’t doing anything like Intermittent Fasting, Carb Backloading, IIFYM or any other fashional nutritional method.

It is also based on a normal class (lasting about 1.5-2 hours with a warm up, drilling and sparring), that starts at about 7pm. Feel free to adjust the timings to make them for your own schedule.

At this point I have to (as always) state that nutrition is a very individual topic and one that requires constant adjustments to get the optimal results. Please speak to your Doctor and Coach before you make any major changes to your dietary habits.

Ok, so for most people the plan will look like this,

530pm (or when you finish work).

Drink 500ml of water.

6pm

Have 25g 100% oats with 1 scoop whey protein and 1 tablespoon 100% natural Peanut butter (chocolate whey tastes best with this).

During Training

Depending on the intensity of a session I like clients to sip on a fast acting protein such as Biotests MAG 10 or Myproteins Peptopro (although any hydrolysed why is fine) in 1.5 – 2 litres of water.

60 mins after training

Have a solid meal of lean, easily digested protein and simple carbs. White fish or chicken with some white rice is perfect.

Before bed

Have another meal of protein and fats (no carbs).

The purpose of this is to first hydrate your body (you’re probably not drinking enough water), then to get some slow release carbs into your system that will help fuel your workouts and start the process of your body shuttling nutrients to your muscles.

We then want to give your body an easily digestible protein source that is absorbed extremely quickly without causing any bloating or discomfort (ever tried rolling after a big meal?).

Finally we give your body more nutrients to help the recovery process by refuelling energy (glycogen) stores and promoting optimal hormone response for great sleep and further recovery.

The science of getting pre, intra and post workout nutrition is a complex subject that many are over looking in BJJ. I’m not kidding when I say that it can make a MASSIVE difference to your performance, especially your recovery. Take the time to work out the best fuel for your training and I guarantee that you will see a difference.

Bulking - A bad idea.

I've stated my thoughts on bulking and cutting before.

It's a bad idea that really only works for the 'enhanced' or very genetically gifted. For most it just results in some strength gains and possibly diabetes or heart disease.

Thankfully as most of us compete in weight class sports it's not something that we come across on a frequent basis. I do often see however, people jumping up massively in weight between fights and competitions.

This is essentially the same thing with negative consequences all round. Fighters and weight class athletes should look to be only a few pounds away from their competition weight at all times and focus on good, solid nutrition that swill allow for optimum recovery and training frequency.

People should focus on having a solid and healthy metabolism that allows them to get all of the required nutrients in but allow them to eat the maximum amount of calories possible while MAINTAINING their weight. This allows for easier weight and body composition changes while ensuring maximum performance and recovery.

Great resources in this area are articles by John Berardi, Shelby Starnes, Martin Rooney, Jim Wendler, Skip Hill and John Meadows.

In fact HERE is a great article by John on the subject of bulking (you can read interviews with John and Shelby HERE as well).

Cutting weight for same day competitions.

Hey Guys,

One of the main questions I get asked is how to cut weight for same day weigh ins and competition.

A lot of people often find themselves a few pounds over on fight week and want to know the best way in which to get rid of them. Now the best option that allows for the very best performance is not to cut weight. You want to be at a point where you can have a few meals before you fight and come in fuelled and ready to go!

However we also live in a world where people aren't prepared and like to do things last minute...

The problem is that standard water cuts, dehydration and starvation is just stupid for any combat sport with a same day weigh in. Without 24 hours to re hydrate, get adequate fuel into your system and restore electrolyte balance etc it is just a recipe for disaster. It will lead to terrible performance and even injury.

I'm going to state at this point that messing around with weight cuts is no joke. People have died. Don't mess round with anything when you don't know what you're doing. SPEAK TO YOUR COACH AND DOCTOR!!!

So basically if you can't do a full water cut and you don't want to starve yourself then what do you do?

Well this week I am going to be doing a mini cut starting tomorrow showing a few little tricks that will help you shift a few pounds but still be optimal to fight and train. I will be updating everything on each day to give you a breakdown of what to expect. I will probably condense it into one post as well in case anyone misses anything.

More details coming tomorrow!

What to eat on Competition day for BJJ

Next time you are at a BJJ competition take a look around.

You will see people eating all sorts of crazy and wonderful foods that they think will help give them the edge on the mat. People are looking to get the smallest of advantages on their opponents and walk away with some precious metal around their neck.

But are they wasting their time or even worse, hindering their performance?

The object of this blog post is to try to give you a bit of a better idea on what to eat come competition day.

Before I start going into details of food types etc I am going to have say the classic line of “Speak to your coach and Doctor before you undertake any major changes in diet”. Your coach will know your past history with making weight and your performance, and therefore will know you a lot better than me! Please use this as a rough guide and speak to your coach first.

Making weight for a competition is a highly individual topic well beyond the scope of this blog post. If you are having trouble making weight or are thinking about moving a weight class then speak to your coach or a professional.

OK, so lets talk competition day!

I’m going to assume that most of the people that are reading this post have cut a little weight but nothing to drastic (no silly water cuts etc), you probably wake up on comp day, check your weight then either panic like mad and go running or find you are right on the line and are ready to fight.

This will be about 90% of people.

Most people walk around a few kilos over their weight category and cut a little weight before the competition. They wake up right on the limit that they can be, then head to weigh in. This all goes fine but it is what happens after the weigh in that makes most people feel crap. They eat the wrong foods and either under hydrate or over hydrate to quickly.

So let’s take a look at an idea situation.

Wake up.

Check weight and make sure you are either right on the line or have a little wiggle room. Having a few KG to spare is best for most people as more and more competitions are following the IBJJF lead and having competitors weigh in really close to fight time (let’s assume for this article it’s 45 mins before the first fight).

So if you do indeed have a few KG to spare I recommend having a breakfast of some low GI carbs and a little fat. If you handle gluten well, then oats are a good bet with a spoon full of natural peanut butter.

If you are right on the line then just have a few sips of water and head to the event.

After weigh in.

Now you have 30-45 mins to hydrate and fuel up for the first fight. This is why doing massive water cuts and starving yourself is a bad idea. You’re not going to be able to fuel yourself and hydrate for optimum performance. You also run a high risk of cramp when you are in the fight.

After you have weighed in you want to do the following things,

·      Hydrate.
·      Top off glycogen stores by having some fast acting, easily digestible carbohydrates (being bloated and stuffed when about to fight is a terrible idea).
·      Start warming up.

Now because this is happening in a short time window I recommend having a liquid carb drink that has a low osmolity (clears the stomach quickly and digests easily). Carb sources such as waxy maize, vitargo and highly branched cyclic dextrin are great here. You want to have between 60-100g of carbs depending on your size in about 1500ml of water.

This will allow you to sip this while warming up and be ready to fight in 45 mins. I personally like to have 50g in 600ml water as soon as I have weighed in and another 50g while I am warming up in 1000ml of water (remember I have a few KG to spare and I am not very dehydrated).

Some people like to eat after weighing in. This is fine but you should choose a carb source that is easily digestible and doesn’t give you any issues. This is completely personal and you should know what works best for you due to what you normally eat. White rice or bananas is a safe bet for most people.

What you DON’T want to do is to be eating this like pasta, sandwiches and cheap protein bars. These are often high in sugars and gluten which can effect your already nervous digestive system.

Between Fights

Now at this point you’re not going to have much time between each match.

You want to keep your energy topped up and available for the next fight but not feel full and sluggish.

Most of my clients sip on a carb drink of about 50g of carbs between fights in 2 litres of water. For most people it’s a bad idea for them to try and eat anything as it just makes them feel heavy and bloated.

Obviously if you are fighting in the absolute division or are doing NoGi on the same day then you will want to have something between the two categories. Since there is often a few hours between them this is a good opportunity to have some solid food.

Again you want to stick with easily digestible foods and preferably foods that you are used to. Chicken and white rice with a little bit of olive oil is a very good option for most. This will give you energy but won’t hamper digestion.

Make sure that you are sipping water all the way through the day. Most people pee a lot more on competition days due to nerves and the fight or flight response we all get to people wanting to choke us and pull our limbs off. Ideally you want your wee to be clear every time you go to the toilet.

Having a well though out and organised plan for competition day is a must for every athlete intent on taking home a medal. It gives you one less thing to worry about so that you know that you are fuelled up and ready to fight.

Plan your nutrition just as serious as your training and I guarantee that you will see a difference.

Stay Healthy,

Mike

I understand your confusion...

Weight classes are confusing.

For a start in grappling, they seem to be different at every event (apart from IBJJF). Some can be as much as a few KG while others are just 0.4KG.

Some have weigh ins early then fights start an hour later. Some weigh in 15 mins before a fight. Some even weigh in minutes before (like last Saturday, I had to wait on the mats as my opponent was still getting changed).

All of this makes it very confusing to gauge what is best for you. It also makes it a nightmare for a nutritional coach like me.

I always ask my fighters what time will they be weighing in and what time will they be fighting. I tailor their nutrition to match not only themselves but the schedule they are on. If the schedule is unpredictable or changes suddenly then it makes it stressful for my clients. Not what you want on competition day!

Now I understand that running an event is stressful (I've helped run a couple) and not everything can be planned to the last detail. But if you are expecting to charge a premium for an event, then you better run it like a premium event (not pointing fingers).

With many events now saying that they adopt the IBJJF rules (feel sorry for the refs) then why aren't they sticking to the weight classes or even the rules themselves?

I personally like the idea of weighing in right before you step on the mat. It would help limit the number of people that starve themselves or do silly water loading and sauna protocols. Fighters would fight at their correct weight being fuelled and ready to fight. In my very limited and humble opinion it should be like this for every weight class,

  • Weight class told to warm up 30 mins before first fight.
  • All fighters weighed in 5 mins before first fight (first fighters weighing in first)
  • Weight class starts.

This would obviously need more people to run the event and make it a lot more scheduled and organised. A bit harder to do? Yes. Better for the fighters and minimise complaints? Yes.

If grappling is going to continue to grow at the rate it is (did someone whisper Olympics) then the focus MUST change to fighter experience and not the experience or ease of the promotors.

Now a lot of promotors will say that they put fighters first at their competitions. When was the last time that gold medalists received a prize that was worth even the same as their entry fee or even a prize at all? However this is slowly changing with events either having better trophies or being low cost for fighters to enter.

All I want to see is events that put fighters first. Surely the money will follow the experience?

Thoughts?

Stay Healthy,

Mike
