Subf15teen

Well Guys, it's that time again!

It's finally here and tomorrow is the fantastic Subf15teen event held at the Marton Country Club and will be showcasing some of the best fighters in the UK!

I have been fortunate to be part of the event right from the start, sponsoring every event. It's a great show that just seems to grow from straight to strength. This isn't just because of the fantastic fighters it has on it's cards or the great prizes the fighters get for winning (yes actual prizes, not just 50p medals), but because of the way that the show treats its fighters. This is something that most BJJ comps need to take a lesson from.

The fighters must come first!

It is because the show takes such good care of its fighters that they can put together amazing cards and fights that the fans will love.

I mean just look at a few of the fights that are happening tomorrow,

Arya Esfandmaz vs. Ross Nicholls
Alain Guerra Pozo vs. Shaun Matthews
David Morcegao vs. Jim Notini
Sean McDonagh vs. Peter Youds
4 Man Blue Belt Title Belt Tournament
Ladies Title Belt Tournament

Plus loads of other world class fighters. I really can't think of a better format for BJJ and NoGI in Britain.

If you haven't got a ticket you can still get them HERE

Also for those travelling there is also a deal for cheap hotel rooms HERE

I'll be floating round the event so make sure that you pop over and say Hi!

What to eat on Competition day for BJJ

Next time you are at a BJJ competition take a look around.

You will see people eating all sorts of crazy and wonderful foods that they think will help give them the edge on the mat. People are looking to get the smallest of advantages on their opponents and walk away with some precious metal around their neck.

But are they wasting their time or even worse, hindering their performance?

The object of this blog post is to try to give you a bit of a better idea on what to eat come competition day.

Before I start going into details of food types etc I am going to have say the classic line of “Speak to your coach and Doctor before you undertake any major changes in diet”. Your coach will know your past history with making weight and your performance, and therefore will know you a lot better than me! Please use this as a rough guide and speak to your coach first.

Making weight for a competition is a highly individual topic well beyond the scope of this blog post. If you are having trouble making weight or are thinking about moving a weight class then speak to your coach or a professional.

OK, so lets talk competition day!

I’m going to assume that most of the people that are reading this post have cut a little weight but nothing to drastic (no silly water cuts etc), you probably wake up on comp day, check your weight then either panic like mad and go running or find you are right on the line and are ready to fight.

This will be about 90% of people.

Most people walk around a few kilos over their weight category and cut a little weight before the competition. They wake up right on the limit that they can be, then head to weigh in. This all goes fine but it is what happens after the weigh in that makes most people feel crap. They eat the wrong foods and either under hydrate or over hydrate to quickly.

So let’s take a look at an idea situation.

Wake up.

Check weight and make sure you are either right on the line or have a little wiggle room. Having a few KG to spare is best for most people as more and more competitions are following the IBJJF lead and having competitors weigh in really close to fight time (let’s assume for this article it’s 45 mins before the first fight).

So if you do indeed have a few KG to spare I recommend having a breakfast of some low GI carbs and a little fat. If you handle gluten well, then oats are a good bet with a spoon full of natural peanut butter.

If you are right on the line then just have a few sips of water and head to the event.

After weigh in.

Now you have 30-45 mins to hydrate and fuel up for the first fight. This is why doing massive water cuts and starving yourself is a bad idea. You’re not going to be able to fuel yourself and hydrate for optimum performance. You also run a high risk of cramp when you are in the fight.

After you have weighed in you want to do the following things,

·      Hydrate.
·      Top off glycogen stores by having some fast acting, easily digestible carbohydrates (being bloated and stuffed when about to fight is a terrible idea).
·      Start warming up.

Now because this is happening in a short time window I recommend having a liquid carb drink that has a low osmolity (clears the stomach quickly and digests easily). Carb sources such as waxy maize, vitargo and highly branched cyclic dextrin are great here. You want to have between 60-100g of carbs depending on your size in about 1500ml of water.

This will allow you to sip this while warming up and be ready to fight in 45 mins. I personally like to have 50g in 600ml water as soon as I have weighed in and another 50g while I am warming up in 1000ml of water (remember I have a few KG to spare and I am not very dehydrated).

Some people like to eat after weighing in. This is fine but you should choose a carb source that is easily digestible and doesn’t give you any issues. This is completely personal and you should know what works best for you due to what you normally eat. White rice or bananas is a safe bet for most people.

What you DON’T want to do is to be eating this like pasta, sandwiches and cheap protein bars. These are often high in sugars and gluten which can effect your already nervous digestive system.

Between Fights

Now at this point you’re not going to have much time between each match.

You want to keep your energy topped up and available for the next fight but not feel full and sluggish.

Most of my clients sip on a carb drink of about 50g of carbs between fights in 2 litres of water. For most people it’s a bad idea for them to try and eat anything as it just makes them feel heavy and bloated.

Obviously if you are fighting in the absolute division or are doing NoGi on the same day then you will want to have something between the two categories. Since there is often a few hours between them this is a good opportunity to have some solid food.

Again you want to stick with easily digestible foods and preferably foods that you are used to. Chicken and white rice with a little bit of olive oil is a very good option for most. This will give you energy but won’t hamper digestion.

Make sure that you are sipping water all the way through the day. Most people pee a lot more on competition days due to nerves and the fight or flight response we all get to people wanting to choke us and pull our limbs off. Ideally you want your wee to be clear every time you go to the toilet.

Having a well though out and organised plan for competition day is a must for every athlete intent on taking home a medal. It gives you one less thing to worry about so that you know that you are fuelled up and ready to fight.

Plan your nutrition just as serious as your training and I guarantee that you will see a difference.

After yesterdays Post

Hey Guys,

Yesterday I posted an article on the benefits of having a game plan and using specific practice to get better.

GripHouse and Dinky Ninjas Coach Paul McVeigh did a better job than I ever could of this.

I understand your confusion...

Weight classes are confusing.

For a start in grappling, they seem to be different at every event (apart from IBJJF). Some can be as much as a few KG while others are just 0.4KG.

Some have weigh ins early then fights start an hour later. Some weigh in 15 mins before a fight. Some even weigh in minutes before (like last Saturday, I had to wait on the mats as my opponent was still getting changed).

All of this makes it very confusing to gauge what is best for you. It also makes it a nightmare for a nutritional coach like me.

I always ask my fighters what time will they be weighing in and what time will they be fighting. I tailor their nutrition to match not only themselves but the schedule they are on. If the schedule is unpredictable or changes suddenly then it makes it stressful for my clients. Not what you want on competition day!

Now I understand that running an event is stressful (I've helped run a couple) and not everything can be planned to the last detail. But if you are expecting to charge a premium for an event, then you better run it like a premium event (not pointing fingers).

With many events now saying that they adopt the IBJJF rules (feel sorry for the refs) then why aren't they sticking to the weight classes or even the rules themselves?

I personally like the idea of weighing in right before you step on the mat. It would help limit the number of people that starve themselves or do silly water loading and sauna protocols. Fighters would fight at their correct weight being fuelled and ready to fight. In my very limited and humble opinion it should be like this for every weight class,

  • Weight class told to warm up 30 mins before first fight.
  • All fighters weighed in 5 mins before first fight (first fighters weighing in first)
  • Weight class starts.

This would obviously need more people to run the event and make it a lot more scheduled and organised. A bit harder to do? Yes. Better for the fighters and minimise complaints? Yes.

If grappling is going to continue to grow at the rate it is (did someone whisper Olympics) then the focus MUST change to fighter experience and not the experience or ease of the promotors.

Now a lot of promotors will say that they put fighters first at their competitions. When was the last time that gold medalists received a prize that was worth even the same as their entry fee or even a prize at all? However this is slowly changing with events either having better trophies or being low cost for fighters to enter.

All I want to see is events that put fighters first. Surely the money will follow the experience?

Thoughts?

Mike

Well that didn't go to plan...

Hey Guys,

Well the comp didn't exactly go to plan...

I got smashed on points in both my fights. I was slow, sloppy, and I rushed the opportunities I did get. So over all I'm not happy with my performance at all (I even had nightmares about triangle set ups last night lol).

Ok, so what am I going to do about it?

As they say in BJJ, "You win, or you learn". So what did I learn?

Firstly the good stuff.

  • While I felt good on the day, the division below is definitely for me. Time to cut a little weight. However if you never try, then you never know!
  • Eating on the morning was good and made me feel great. Therefore, close cuts are out.
  • Cardio felt OK.
Now the other bits,
  • I need a competition strategy. Simply going in and winging it is a recipe to get dominated by someone else's game plan.
  • I rush things and need to calm down. I try to be technical in the gym, but that went out the window yesterday.
  • Need more competition experience.
Nothing really ground breaking there and I imagine every competitor could tell you that they went through the same thing. Guess you never know till you touch the stove!

On a great note, every client that competed over the weekend won either a medal or their competition! Special mentions to Leon who won his first ever gold and Matt who won double gold at the UK Stick fighting Championship, all while dieting for the World Champs!

I love working with such hard working people!

Competition time!

Hey Guys,

As some of you will know I decided this week to enter VS Grappling at the last minute as a few of my team mates were doing the event and I haven't competed yet this year.

However as I haven't been in comp training mode, it also means that I have been walking around at 71KG instead of my comp weight of 67KG. SO what does this mean?

Well, it means that I get to eat loads of carbs on competition day :)

As the class cut off it 73.9KG I have quite a bit of wiggle room to make sure that I am fully fuelled for the comp.

So how will that look?

Here is what I plan to eat tomorrow.

Wake up

Check weight. If still 70 KG or under have a breakfast of oats and 2-3 slices of gluten free toast, 500ml water.

9am.

500ml water, 1 chicken breast, 200g white rice.

10am

Weigh in.

Straight after have have 500ml water and 1 Biotest Finibar.

I will then have a Finibar for very 30 mins I am waiting to fight and sip on water.

When they call for my division to warm up I will take 2 servings of Biotest Plazma and warm up.

Then depending on whether I killed smashed by bigger gentlemen, I will have another 2 servings of Plazma between fights.

As you can see, this is mostly all carbs and a little protein with pretty much no fat. If I was right on the nose for weighing in or I had more time, these choices would change. The most important thing for me is to make sure I am rested, fuelled, and I don't have a big bloat going on from eating pasta or something along those lines.

Obviously this would change quite a lot depending on the client and the sport, but this is just to give you a quick glance into what I am doing.

Shortly I will be writing an article on how to set up your own eating for BJJ competition so stay tuned!

Subf15teen - A round up.

Hey Guys,

As many of you will know, this weekend saw some of the best grapplers in the UK fight it out to see who is the submission king!

It was a fantastic event with all fighters putting on a highly technical and exciting performance! In fact my favourite fight ended in a draw!

Rather than going through each fight blow by blow (or choke by choke), I will let the videos speak for themselves (picture is worth a 1000 words I hear).

Here are the fights! (my clients are highlighted in red)

What a show!!

Well Guys,

For those that were there, you already know what an amazing show Subf15teen was last night!

It was an amazing event with some very high level grappling on display! Subf15teen is fast becoming one of the best grappling comps in the country and if you fancy a slot on the next one then I would ask Marty or Shaun on the Facebook page as it is filling up fast!

As I said in a previous post, it is how the event is ran and how they look after the fighters that makes the biggest difference. I am very proud to support the show and I'll be doing a full write up on the event very soon!

So what is going on with me?

On the business side of things it's great to be working with people from all walks of life and sports! I love working with such a diverse range of people as they all bring something that is a little different that requires its own level of special attention.

Things are also going well with the new website and I am looking to incorporate some new features and products such as,

  • Monthly payments and spreading the cost of higher costing plans
  • An affiliate scheme that will benefit the affiliate much more than me!
  • On line Coaching Programmes (I am recruiting now if you would like to feature).
  • Blog integration on the site.
  • Members only area with exclusive plans, articles and interviews.
Plus a load of other stuff!

As for my own training, I'm just focusing on certain areas of my BJJ and not trying to become a one sided athlete (keep sitting in half guard looking for the same sweeps and submissions), bringing my strength up a bit, and giving my metabolism a boost.

After a tough year last year with the previous operations (see archives for details of how I recovered in record time), maintaining and cutting weight, plus a few mini diets, I want to get my metabolism firing on all cylinders again. This doesn't mean that my metabolism is in trouble or slow, I just want to be able to eat as much as possible and have the best recovery.

Metabolism health is no joke and having a healthy one is a massive part of being able to manipulate your weight depending on your goal (making weight for a comp, looking good on the beach etc). Having prolonged strict diets without any form of refeed etc is a very bad idea and can have severe health consequences.

I am going to be writing article on this topic very soon so stay tuned!

Here is a lis of stuff that I'm loving the moment (Loves me a good lis),
  1. Kit Dales new grip for omaplatta and triangle set ups.
  2. Gi (again)
  3. Fanta Zero
  4. Steak
  5. Evernote (who could live without this genius app?)
  6. TED talks and presentations (not the foul mouthed toy).
  7. Sunshine baby!!
  8. THIS video. please watch if you are a teacher or a parent.
Stay Healthy,

Mike

Excited!!

Now I'll admit that at times, I can be guilty of being over positive.

I can't help it!

I'm really lucky to live a life that I love with the love and support from some pretty awesome people.

However I still don't get excited all that much. Now I don't mean that I don't look forward to things, I have things that I can't WAIT to happen. But I'm talking about being excited like a kid.

Like EXCITED!!!!

Tonights Subf15teen is one of them things I'm EXCITED ABOUT!

How could I not be? Just look at this card!

I just love grappling. It's positively influenced nearly all parts of my life and it's constantly teaching me about myself.

If you don't identify with what I'm talking about, chances are that you don't grapple (saying goes, if you don't roll, you don't know...). So if you're in the Teesside area of the North East of England, and you want to see what this is all about (possibly changing your life forever) then get down to the Marton Country Club on Stokesley Road in Middlesbrough to see one of the best grappling events in the UK!

Also if you see me, pop over and say Hi, I'm nice and stuff.

Stay healthy,

Mike
