Product Review - MyProtein Kar-bolyn

Hey Guys,

Today I want to talk about MyProteins Kar-bolyn

Kar-bolyn is a very fast digesting, high osmolity carb source that is used around training. Here is what MyProtein had to say about it,

arbo-Lyn®is a patented carbohydrate sourced from starch and contains very unique properties. It is a homopolysaccharide carbohydrate which means it is made up of many monosaccharide’s joined together by glycosidic bonds. Karbo-Lyn® passes through the stomach very quickly and it acts like a pump, pulling water and nutrients along with it.
Benefits of Karbo-Lyn®
Karbo-Lyn® has a high osmolality and is completely sugar free. To create a fast absorption through the stomach, the molecular mass has been uniquely manipulated making it have an uptake much faster than dextrose or Maltodextrin but without the added bloating effect.
Who is Karbo-Lyn® Suitable for?
Karbo-Lyn® is ideal for anyone looking for a source of carbohydrates before or after their training or competition. It is also suitable for anyone looking for a non-sugar based carbohydrate prior to endurance or ultra-endurance based events or for recovery after resistance based exercise. Due to the fast uptake of Karbo-Lyn®, it is recommended to consume this immediately following your exercise.
We recommend consuming 50g of Karbo-Lyn® either before, after or during your exercise. However, this will depend on your specific training goals and the type of exercise you are undertaking.
Sounds good! Lets have a look at the nutritional information,

Here are the ingredients,

100% Karbo-Lyn® (homopolysaccharide derived from potato, rice and corn. 100% Starch)

As you can see, this is pretty interesting! I originally looked at this product as a cheaper alternative to Biotests Plazma and I've got to say, I've been very impressed with the results! The product gives you loads of energy with zero bloating or gas issues and is a wonder for recovery. I have also been using this as a re fuel tool with some of my athletes after weigh ins, and it has performed incredibly well!

This product is perfect for the hard trainer or an athlete whop wants to refuel after a weigh in. This product would also be awesome for very long events such as Triathlons or competitions that have more that one match/fight throughout the day.

Highly Recommended!

Stay Healthy,

Mike

Product Review - Biotest Plazma

Hey Guys,

Today I wanted to talk about Biotest Plazma.

Plazma is a product that has been around for a while. It gains a lot of love and hate from people in the supplement world. I have been using the product since its release and have tested it on numerous clients as well as myself in a variety of different situations.

Here is what Biotest had to say about it,

At the elite level, the physical demands of working at maximum intensity are so extreme that it can only be done for a week or two at a time before backing off to let the body recover. With Plazma™ that's no longer true.
Plazma™ contains a unique blend of fast-acting di- and tripeptides that produce biological activities and effects in muscle that go far beyond other proteins and amino acids. The formula also contains a special carbohydrate complex that in addition to increasing metabolic rate, drives these di- and tripeptides and other key nutrients into the muscle cell to the point of creating a high-performance pump effect.
By uniquely preloading and driving these key nutrients deep into muscle, Plazma™ enables you to perform at and beyond your limits while recovering and gaining so fast you'll be itching to get back in the gym and do it again. The recovery rate and the increased gains you're going to experience from Plazma™ will be shocking. So, don't hold back in the gym, and train your heart out. You'll completely recover, grow, and be ready for more.
And here are the label and ingredients details,

Ok, so the details!

Plazma is basically a low osmolity, very fast acting carb source that is designed to be taken before and after training or competition. Because it is very fast acting and easily digestible, it is used by the body straight away and shuttled to your muscles where you need it most during training.

As previously mentioned I have tried this out with myself and numerous clients from all different backgrounds. I have used this product on fighters, weight lifters, Crossfitters, Body Builders, Track athletes, triathlon athletes and many others. the results has been the same right across the board, this stuff flat out works.

In many athletes I have used this to completely eliminate soreness and out recovery through the roof. After getting the dosage right many athletes added more sessions into their training as their recovery time simply halved.

Plazma is great for not only normal training but also for competition. As it is easily digested and absorbed without causing bloating, it is ideal for competition where you need to re fuel between matches or front load a lot of nutrients.

It mixes great (if you follow the instructions) and can be flavoured depending on which flavouring you choose (I personally like Orange and Berry). The product keeps really well so you can mix it up the night before and keep it in the fridge. Make sure that you use the amount of water it states though as lesser amounts can give some people a funny tummy.

I will say that the marketing claims of Biotest are slightly on the exaggerated side, however very few products get close to this. The only problem for some is simply drinking the amount of water during training. While this may be a lot of fluid, your body soon gets used to it.

I really couldn't recommend this product enough. It has changed a lot of peoples training and recovery and I will continue to recommend it to training partners and clients.

Stay healthy,

Mike

Product Review - Biotest Micro-PA

Hey Guys,

Today I want to talk about Biotest Micro - PA.

Biotest Micro - PA is designed to increase the muscles uptake of nutrients and increase the amount of MTOR your body produces leading to better protein synthesis.

Here are the label details,

And here is what Biotest have to say about it,

  • Weight training produces muscle growth by activating mTOR, which is the master enzyme responsible for muscle cell protein synthesis resulting in hypertrophy.
  • Muscle cells use phosphatidic acid (PA) to activate and regulate mTOR.
  • Subjects taking a PA supplement achieved 50% greater increase in muscle cross-sectional area and lean body mass, 40% greater increase in total strength (upper and lower body), and 60% greater loss in body fat than the training-only group (Wilson et al 2014, in press).
  • Micro-PA™ contains a highly specialized form of unsaturated phosphatidic acid (PA), with enhanced bioavailability, that powerfully activates and amplifies muscle cell protein synthesis.
So this sounds great!

I looked at all of the research and it looked very promising. I also followed along in the specific Micro - PA threads on the Biotest Website and everyone was reporting great increases in muscle mass and performance. With all of this in mind I asked Biotest for a bottle to try for myself. During the test I made no changes to diet and kept my workout nutrition the same (using Biotest MAG - 10 and Plazma). This was to see if the Micro - PA alone would have a positive effect on training.

So what effect did it have?

It had zero.

I took the full bottle, with the stated dose every day, following the bottle directions perfectly. It made no difference at all to my performance, weight or strength. The only slight difference it made was that my pump lasted a bit longer in the gym.

Biotest do make amazing products and I do highly recommend a lot of them (see other reviews). I use them and a lot of my clients use them. This is one product however that I cannot recommend. I would pass on this and put your money into Biotest Plazma and Indigo 3G.

Mike

Product Review - Biotest Z12

Hey Guys,

Today I am talking about Biotest Z12

Z12 is a sleep specific supplement that is designed to be slightly more effective than standard ZMA.

Here is what Biotest have to say about it,

The Biotest Z12 is a new product which has been developed to help make sure that athletes and bodybuilders alike all get a nice and well earned full night sleep.
The formula for this product has been specially manipulated to help make sure that you do not experience the "hangover" generally associated with sleeping pills.
This product can also be great for anyone who is need of a relaxing sleep before a big day ahead of them, for example a job interview, an athletic meet or an exam.
Travelers can also find it quite useful as they often sleep in beds that they are not accustomed to and the Z12 is great in helping to prevent an anxiety-packed day and turn it into a much more tolerable one.
And the label,

Now I am a big fan of normal ZMA and include it my own, and my clients nutritional plans simply because it has such a positive effect on sleep and recovery. I use ZMA pretty much Monday to Friday every week (I take a little break to keep it effective), so I was looking forward to trying this.

I started with a dose of two tablets and it worked pretty well. I feel asleep quickly and more importantly, stayed asleep all night. I then increased my dose to 3 caps. This is when I encountered a problem. Through the week I like to get up pretty early and make a start on the day. However when I took 3 caps I simply couldn't wake up. Even after I had coffee and walked my dogs I still felt drowsy, like I could easily fall asleep again. It wasn't just me either, my wife had a very similar effect when we upped her dose.

However if I allowed myself to wake up naturally and not use an alarm clock I felt great.

My conclusion is that the stuff is simply to effective for every day use. For everyday use I would recommend normal ZMA, however if you are looking for a longer, deeper sleep then I would recommend the Z12. While I won't have this as a staple in my nutrition, I will use it for things such as travelling or when I really need to catch up on my recovery.

All in all a decent product, however I would use with slight caution. I wouldn't want to be giving a big presentation the after a higher dose. If you travel a lot then these could be a real winner for helping you sleep and recover!

Mike,

Product Review - Biotest Micronised Creatine

Hey Guys,

Today I will be reviewing Biotests Micronised creatine.

Here are the specific label details on it,

I don't really know what I can say about creatine that hasn't already been said a million times. Creatine is a relatively cheat supplement that can aid in recovery, strength and performance by helping draw more water into the muscle. Many people notice a vast difference when taking creatine and when it first came out the Olympic commission gave thought to banning it as it was so effective.

I personally don't notice any effect when taking creatine. I do however take 5g per day as recent studies have shown that taking creatine can have a massive preventative effect on mental disease.

For those that do use creatine this is a great choice. It is of a very high quality and has been micronised to aid in absorption. Biotest now do it in a 800g tub for £22.99 which will last you absolutely ages.

Mike

What I'm doing.

Hey Guys,

I get asked a lot from people what my own nutrition looks like and what my goals are.

Now depending on when they ask me they will probably get very different answers. A lot of the time I am trying out ideas for clients, testing products or rotating between a few goals I have throughout the year. Because of this my nutrition is always changing (unless I have a time based goal like a competition).

However at the moment my nutrition is geared to support the following goals,

  • Improve my BJJ
  • Improve recovery (everything goes to shit after 30)
  • Increase strength and explosiveness.
So if I was to combine these goals then I would need my nutrition to do the following,
  • Remain healthy and injury free so I can train frequently.
  • Reduce soreness in muscles
  • Reduce inflammation in joints
  • Increase energy for training sessions and in general
  • Support training sessions to hit specific strength goals throughout the year.
  • Increase metabolism steadily without weight gain (including muscle mass) due to fitting into a weight class sport.
So what does that look like?

Well it focuses on whole, nutritionally dense foods with a timed approach to carbohydrates. For me personally, I do better on a high protein, high fat diet with my carbs kept to before and during my workouts.

Having foods that are nutritionally dense helps keep me healthy while foods that reduce inflammation help with soreness and joint issues.

I am slowly trying to increase the amount of food that I consume to increase my metabolism. This is done by slowly adding in calories (around 100-200 per week depending on results) while keeping my weight within a specific range (69-71KG). At this point I am doing this by adding carbs in at certain points. To start with I did this by utilising workout nutrition in the form of Biotest Plazma before and during hard training. As I go on I will be adding carbs into my post training meal then possibly the meal before bed. While I have a figure in mind that I think that my body will tolerate (about 40% above my BMR) as a max, I will be monitoring it as I go incase it stops before that.

Doing this will have the following benefits,
  • Allow me to hit my training and health goals.
  • Make future weight cuts and fat loss a bit easier
  • Allow me to eat more food (I like food).
I am estimating that this will take about a year to complete. To some this may seem like a long time for a fitness goal. However since I plan on training forever this is just a very tiny slice of my training and nutritional life that will only aid my future goals.

I must mention the need for flexibility during this.

Sometimes life will throw unexpected things at you and for that reason alone you must be prepared to change your goals somewhat. During this time I may fall sick, or want to compete, or have time constraints. The zombie apocalypse may occur. because of these external factors I must be flexible and be prepared to adjust the overall plan to keep moving forward.

If you have any questions about your nutrition, head over to the free Q&A and ask away :)

Mike

Stuff I recommend.

Hey Guys,

One of the questions that I get asked a lot is what food and supplements do I recommend?

I always answer the question with the classic "A solid nutrition programme beats any supplement or fad diet", and that's true. I won't ever sway from that as there are many great athletes and people smashing their goals with little to no supplements.

No supplement is necessary and anyone telling you that you NEED any supplement to hit your goals probably has their own agenda at heart.

Smart, dedicated nutrition beats everything!

However there are some supplements out there that make life a little bit easier and in some situations make things better.

In this post I will highlight brands and companies that I think that put out great stuff. Stuff that I use myself and recommend to clients.

DISCLAIMER

Some of these companies I am affiliated with. This means that If you go through the links below and purchase something I either get a small piece of that or it helps me improve relationships so that I get more products to test (for posts like this). Some of these companies I have no affiliation with and get zero from them. I just think it's great stuff.

If can find detailed product reviews on many of these products in the product section of the website which can be found HERE

Ok, first are the supplement companies that I recommend.

Myprotein

In particular I like their Impact Whey, Pre:Pare, ZMA, Vitamin System and waxy maize.

Biotest UK

Massive fans of Plazma, Mag-10, Indigo 3G, Flameout, Hot Rox and ZMA.

PhD Nutrition

Top marks for their Pharma range and Recovery Products.

Now for clothing and Equipment!

Roll Supreme

Tatami

Scramble

All of these companies have fantastic products and even better customer service! They really care about the sport and the people in it.

If you have tried any of these or have your opinion on any of them, please let me know in the comments.

I will occasionally repost this if any new products come out that are worth telling you guys about. Also keep checking the product review section for reviews every week!

Stay Healthy,

Mike

Product review - Biotest Brain Candy

Energy.

It seems that everyone is lacking it at the moment.

We are taking more stimulants thane ever have just to try to get through our days. Energy drinks, tablets, coffee, pre workouts, you name it, we're taking it.

Our lives seem to get more and more hectic with demanding jobs, pushy bosses, workouts, competitions, family, friends. There are a million different things that are all pulling us in a million different directions and some of us need that little bit of help to just get shit done in a productive way.

Now if you ask me, getting your diet sorted and getting proper rest and recovery should always be top of your list. It's amazing how much people change when I help them get these things in order and it really is one of the best parts of my job!

However what if you have all these factors in place but still want that extra kick now and again? It could be for early morning training sessions coming up to a fight or a particular demanding deadline over your head, this is when people look at a supplement that will help them.

I'm going to say right off the bat that I'm very sceptic of over the counter cognitive enhancers. most expect them to deliver a performance akin to the movie Limitless, however most just experience a mild buzz at best. I previously reviewed a product called Alpha Brain that had some pretty bold claims. I found them to be less than impressive.

Last year Biotest came out with the product Brain Candy.

They didn't market it as a brain or performance supplement but rather as a 'Mind Energizing Once-Per-Day Shot™ Helps to Increase Confidence, Reduce Social Anxiety, Improve Mood'.

Here is the nutritional information,

It is claimed to aid in the previously listed factors and comes with a whole host of research to back it. You can find a list of the papers and studies HERE.

So how did I feel on it?

I took the product over the course of a month and used the caffeine free version (I like coffee and don't want to over do my caffeine intake). I took it first thing on a morning, on its own about 30 - 45 mins before I ingested anything else. I basically got up, took Brain Candy, then walked my dogs.

Now normally it takes me a while to feel like I'm ready to write on a morning. It's always the best time for me to work as my brain switches off in the early afternoon then comes back on at night. When taking the Brain Candy I felt great. By the time I got back from walking the dogs I felt raring to go! Creative work was done a lot more quickly and efficiently and I got through boring tasks like admin and paper work better as well. It also worked well for early morning training sessions while I was helping clients get ready for the Subf15teen show (and we all know how you need to be alert when someone is trying to choke you).

Did I experience all the amazing effects that they state on the site? Well no. Some of the claims are flat out ridiculous and are blatant nonsense (if you claim to finish a 2 hour project in 15 mins it either means you weren't working very hard to the first place or you were high!). It's not a owner supplement that will change you from a burger flipper to a CEO over night. Only you can do that with hard work and dedication (not to mention a little help).

Is this a good supplement? Yes it is. If you apply some common sense (as you should with all supplements) it can have a positive effect on your productivity and work load. If you have a major deadline or assignment, or you know work is going to be crazy, then it can certainly help you.

Worth a look.

Stay Healthy,

Mike

Competition time!

Hey Guys,

As some of you will know I decided this week to enter VS Grappling at the last minute as a few of my team mates were doing the event and I haven't competed yet this year.

However as I haven't been in comp training mode, it also means that I have been walking around at 71KG instead of my comp weight of 67KG. SO what does this mean?

Well, it means that I get to eat loads of carbs on competition day :)

As the class cut off it 73.9KG I have quite a bit of wiggle room to make sure that I am fully fuelled for the comp.

So how will that look?

Here is what I plan to eat tomorrow.

Wake up

Check weight. If still 70 KG or under have a breakfast of oats and 2-3 slices of gluten free toast, 500ml water.

9am.

500ml water, 1 chicken breast, 200g white rice.

10am

Weigh in.

Straight after have have 500ml water and 1 Biotest Finibar.

I will then have a Finibar for very 30 mins I am waiting to fight and sip on water.

When they call for my division to warm up I will take 2 servings of Biotest Plazma and warm up.

Then depending on whether I killed smashed by bigger gentlemen, I will have another 2 servings of Plazma between fights.

As you can see, this is mostly all carbs and a little protein with pretty much no fat. If I was right on the nose for weighing in or I had more time, these choices would change. The most important thing for me is to make sure I am rested, fuelled, and I don't have a big bloat going on from eating pasta or something along those lines.

Obviously this would change quite a lot depending on the client and the sport, but this is just to give you a quick glance into what I am doing.

Shortly I will be writing an article on how to set up your own eating for BJJ competition so stay tuned!

If you would like to see photos form the day and hear my ramblings then follow along on Instagram (@mikeUnorthodox) and Twitter (@mike_unorthodox)

Stay healthy,

Mike

Product Review - Biotest Carbolin 19

Fat loss.

It's always going to be THE hot topic in nutrition, especially with the society we live in.

While most realise that it takes sound nutritional planning, hard training and great recovery to get the body of your dreams, some still crave a magic pill.

Or at the very least, a bit of a hand getting that extra edge!

Now I'm the first to tell anyone that looking for supplements to help you move towards your goals is the last thing that you should be looking at.

However if you have everything in line and are just looking for that extra couple of percent then there are a couple of products that I recommend (such as Indigo 3G if you're looking to manage your carb intake and Hot Rox if you're looking for a fat burner).

One of the other things I have been looking at is Biotests carbolic 19.

I started to look at Carbolin 19 a while ago before I tried Indigo 3G. My thinking was not to use the product as a fat burner but as a nutrient partner. While it isn't as potent as Indigo 3G it certainly has some good science behind it.

You can read the article on it HERE

As you can see by the article the supplement is designed to slowly and steadily move your body composition towards more muscle and less fat.

So what did I think?

To be honest my experience of Carbolin 19 was a very positive one.

I kept all macros and training exactly the same and simply added 3 capsules to my day. 2 just before a workout and one about 6-8 hours apart. The first thing I noticed was absolutely nothing.

I mean zero.

I noticed no effect for the first couple of weeks at all. Well nothing out of the ordinary fluctuations that I typically see. However I kept seeing my weight creep up, but my waist measurement go down (I keep an eye on this area as it's the the first place that I accumulate fat). And it kept happening.

I gained 4 pounds and had to scale back the amount I was taking as I was quickly moving out of my weight class (bigger people trying to kill me is no fun). I scaled it back to 2 caps a day and the results slowed down a bit, however I was still gaining when the bottle ran out.

Now I know that there is a lot of people out there who will scoff at 'only' 4 pounds in a month.

That's completely fine.

I know that there is a lot of people out there perma-bulking on gear that aim for a lot more than that. However I track everything to a very geeky degree and I know what variables effect me and what doesn't.

4 pounds as a natural athlete with no other changes is no joke.

Am I going to keep taking it?

Well no. the simple reason is that it isn't right for me or my goals. If I was looking to move up a weight class or didn't care about stepping on a scale for a competition then I would be straight back on it!

Is this for everyone?

If you want to increase the amount of muscle you are carrying while decreasing the amount of fat that you're carrying then I would recommend it (only if the rest of your training, diet and recovery are in order).

However if you are just starting out on your weight loss journey or are experienced, at the top of your weight class or aren't weight training seriously, I would give it a miss.

Just like any supplement, it can have very positive effects on you IF it's the right product and you know what you are doing!

Carbolin 19 costs £49.99 for 60 capsules and is available HERE

John Meadows Interview Part 2

Hey Guys,

Here is the second half of the interview I did with John Meadows (you can read part 1 HERE).

Enjoy!

Mike:              No, we shouldn’t use them. I agree completely with that. I think an amount of people make a strong argument out of genetic outliners. They shouldn’t be used for plans for everybody else. Coming back, obviously to making sure that you train intensely. I know that you are a big component of intra workout nutrition and obviously fueling workouts correctly. You have said previously that you think that’s one of the biggest discoveries you made in nutrition recently, especially when it comes to recovery is intra workout nutrition. I personally use it with all my athletes. We are looking now at things like the Di and Tripeptides now becoming available in the UK where people were trying to get hydrolyzed casein and things like that from all different types of different places and combine them to make their own products. People were having digestive issues and it was terrible. If you could give us a quick overview on your thoughts of correct workout supplementation and training supplementation?

John:               Let me just start by saying this. I believe your nutrition in this respect should match your training. If I’ve got a body builder, weight lifting is weight training, the way we do it is very catabolic in nature. I’m going to be a little more aggressive with my intra workout nutrition with somebody who is really pounding the weights. If I’ve got somebody that is maybe grappling and by the way, I don’t do a lot of that, I don’t want to pretend I’m somebody that I’m not but if I were to have somebody that’s doing a lot of grappling, I probably wouldn’t be as aggressive but it would still be important though because these guys are burning a lot of calories. There is a lot of stress. The longer and harder they can work out, the better athletes they are going to become.

My experience is that these nutrients allow that to happen. The carbohydrates that I love, really there are two of them. Vitargo has been around for a long time. I think that’s a really good one. It’s very low osmolality, which just means that the gastric emptying rate is very high. It clears the stomach very quickly. It doesn’t cause stomach upset. The other one that is my personal favorite is branch cyclic dextrins, also very low osmolality. I’ve never seen anybody have a stomach issue with it. I should clarify. The few people that I know that have stomach issues with these products didn’t use enough water in the drink. You can’t be too concentrated.

Once we fixed the amount of water they were using, they were fine. For body builders, those things are also going to drive insulin and insulin response while you train is really good for a body builder because it’s going to help. Insulin is in your blood and your insulin receptors on your cell membrane are going to say, “Okay, cool. I’ve got some insulin.” The insulin receptor, think of it like a key hole and then the insulin comes along and it’s the key. It inserts into the key hole and it opens up the cell. Think of it like a trap door opens. Then you have these carrier proteins, glucose transporters to go to the surface of the cell where this trap door is and the glucose jumps on board and goes back into the cell.

Long story short, you are getting glucose in that cell. You are getting all these nutrients that are in your blood into your cells, into your muscle cells and the interesting thing, this is also true for your fat cells but the cool thing about training when you are training really hard, you are trashing your muscle cells. The preferentially suck in glucose. You have an opportunity to suck in a lot of glucose in your muscle cell, whereas at another time during the day, your fat cells are going to just say, “Hey, I want some of this too.” It’s not as optimal.

In terms of protein, the biggest mistake I see people make is they don’t use the right protein. Instead of using di and tripeptide, which to be clear to all of your folks listening, those are just proteins that are pretty much digested. They are broken down to their constituent di and tripeptide. They are broken down to their basic form and your body doesn’t need to digest it. The last thing you want when you are training is your digestive system to have to digest a lot of food while you are working out. That’s not a good thing. People, I tell them we’ve got to be very specific with the nutrients or this not only will not work, it will make you feel worse. We need to have the right stuff in to get the effect that we are talking about here. Di and tripeptide are pretty much digested. If you get the right kind and not a cheap version, you are going to have probably over 90% of the protein is going to be digested already, so your body sucks it up, uses it, and makes it in your muscle cells. It drives your free amino acid levels and that in combination with the carbohydrates driving insulin produces this incredible recovery. Insulin is your best friend during training. It will help you manange muscle protein breakdown. Use it to your advantage.

You’ve always got this battle going on during the day with muscle protein synthesis and muscle protein breakdown. My contention is this. When you train really, really hard, more so with weights, you create a lot of muscle protein breakdown and from what I have seen, from what I have observed anecdotally with hundreds upon hundreds of people is that if you can control the muscle protein breakdown right there as it is happening, and by the way, this is going to give you more energy too. Hey, that’s great. That’s the way to go, in my opinion. I don’t think that this timing is meant for everybody. I don’t think most people even train hard enough.

I saw somebody the other day who said, “You have to earn your intra workout nutrition.” I like that.

I thought that was good because that’s true. Most of the people, when I go to the gym now are sitting on benches, they are texting or they are talking on their phones. Let’s be honest here, is an intra workout going to help those guys? No.  They are not even training hard enough to create this environment that we are talking about. This isn’t for everybody. This is for athletes that train really, really hard and I would say the more the end of the spectrum becomes training with weight, the more this has been official but I still think it is very beneficial for people like MMA fighters because they are breaking their bodies down. It may not be like a weight lifter breaking their bodies down but they are training hard.

What I would do is I would do a smaller version of what I would do with a high-level body builder but the concepts still pretty much apply. I think it’s important to note that too. It’s not for everybody but when you get these guys that are the top of their sport or maybe they think they are at their genetic limit. This is a way to help you get more; get more out of your body. That’s how I think about it.

Mike:              Yes, it is something I have observed with people I have worked with to increase muscle mass, obviously is what body builders are after because we have to work within weight class limits, well I know body builders do obviously as well but for the recovery aspect. As far as reducing soreness goes, it’s brilliant and people just love it. They don’t feel as though they are running themselves down all the time. It is brilliant.  It's creating that environment for people get the most of it. The anabolic environment for example, and you are well known for the type training that you do, mountain dog style training. It’s very high intensity type training.

I’ve observed a lot of your clients go to training seven days a week, like yourself going into a competition. That recovery must be a massive part of the nutrition you do with you clients. Do you put that down to the correct nutrition or do you use extra techniques to help with that recovery as well?

John:               Yeah, I should put some context around that too. I don’t train; I don’t have anybody train seven days a week year round.

A lot of people think that. I’m like, “No, no that’s not true.” What is true is that I like for people leading up to an event to be at their physical peak, to be training as hard as they can, getting the best results that they can but the reality is, we are not terminators. We are not machines and we can only handle that level of stress for so long. A large part of the off-season, people are only training four to five days a week. Then they will go to five to six days a week. There is a process that I have of people after their contest is over, I bring them back to four days a week. I lower their intensity levels. I let their body rejuvenate and recuperate and also mentally they are pretty drained. Just mentally I let them get back to a good place, you know?

Then as the months go by, I just gradually build their intensity up. Once I build the intensity up in each session, then I add frequency. I start the extra frequency at a lower intensity. Then I build that up. There is a process that is going on here with what I’m doing with people. There are four days that becomes higher intensity four days, which becomes five days, which becomes higher intensity five days, which becomes six days. It’s very well thought out. I’m not just trying to kill people. That’s not my goal. My goal is for people to get better and there is a very structured way that I do this. Now, everybody is different. Some people can only tolerate at their peak six days a week. Most people can tolerate at least six though if you get this right.
There is some variation with people but there is also a general pattern of if you do this right, you can increase people’s workloads. The people who I really can’t get their workload up that much, I hate to say it but probably genetically, they just don’t have it. People talk about genetics in terms of physical characteristics.

“His clavicles are too narrow or this or that.” I think of genetic limitation
a little differently. I think about your ability to tolerate stress. I have heard people say they do a leg workout and they can’t recover for two weeks. Mentally they are drained for two weeks. When I hear that, I think this person genetically just might not have it. They are never going to be able to tolerate a lot of stress. That tells me they are probably not going to go to a real high level in our sport. That’s just reality. That’s just what I see.

Then I get people that are just the opposite. I get these guys that are freaking animals and I’m holding them back. I’m like, “No, hold on. Let’s just do five days first” and “No, I want to go seven.” They are animals. Those are the guys that as long as we can control it and do this systematically, they are going to improve at a really, really rapid rate. This whole genetics thing, a lot of it to me is just how much stress you can tolerate. Some people just can’t take it to another level during an actual training session. They feel a little pain and they stop. They can’t handle it. Those guys probably aren’t going to make it to a real high level. Again, going back to what we were talking about earlier, of course you have genetic freaks. Some of the top guys in Mr. Olympia, if you saw them train you would probably laugh because their training is pretty soft. They are genetic freaks and they can literally mow the yard and their legs are going to be 32 inches.

Anyway, I build a volume up over time. We peak and this becomes much more complicated when people are competing multiple times during the year but there is always going to be a systematic way to do this. There is always going to be a thought process on how to peak for an event and then how to work your way down.

Mike:              Absolutely and a quick last thing. I realize I am taking quite a bit of your time. The last thing I want to talk about is competing frequency. I know body builders compete a few times a year, grapplers and fighters, especially guys looking to climb the rankings, some of them compete once a month or twice a month, which I think is far too much. I still think you should have an off season as it were where you work on weaknesses etc. How often would you see this training for body builders, would you say competing four times a year is too much? Five times a year is too much or just how the individual handles it or do you have guidelines, etc?

John:               In body building, you have to look at where the person is in the sport. If they are an elite national level competitor, for example, I’ve got a guy who just missed his pro card by one place. His name is Matt Burzacott. He just did the nationals. He missed his pro card by one place. He is right there. For him to take a year off or two years off doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. We’re going to be aggressive. He is right there at that level. The next pro qualifier coming up, he will do it. If he doesn’t win that one, there is another one in three months and he will do that one.

Take that example, that’s one end of spectrum and then you’ve got another end of the spectrum. You’ve got somebody who competes and they’ve got really a lot of weaknesses. They are just trying to win a local level contest but maybe they have body parts that are really far behind and maybe they are just really outmuscled. Those are the guys to be competitive, they are going to need to back off the competitions and they are going to have to put more work into their off season and they are going to have to build their bodies more. It’s very hard to grow when you are going show to show to show very quickly. It’s almost impossible to grow. The only way to do it is through creativity with chemistry.

I’m just being honest there. For people that need to improve a lot to be even competitive, I’m going to hold those guys back and I’m going to say, “Let’s take our time.” Let’s have a good off season. Let’s gain some real good muscle mass but then again the other end of the spectrum somebody may be right there at that elite level, so maybe they could use an extra half inch here or an inch there but those guys, I’m not going to have. They’ve got a window of opportunity. They are right there, so I’m not going to hold them back. I’m not going to say, “Don’t compete for a year. Don’t compete for two years.” We’re going to keep plugging away and we are going to get that pro card. That’s the different philosophies. It just depends on where somebody is at in their development, where they are at on the competition side of things.

It’s really hard for your guys, your MMA guys because I talk about in terms of six months or a year; you’ve got to do that in terms of a month or four to eight weeks.

John:               They need a break.

Mike:              Yeah.

John:               Your programming actually requires a lot more thought than mine.

Mike:              Again, it’s all individual. You mentioned in the beginning how people balloon up in weight afterwards. Sometimes you get fighters that do the exact same thing as soon as the fight is done or sometimes if they haven’t got the right people around them and they are slamming fast food and the weight balloons right up and they’ve got such a hard time to bring it down again. It just becomes a vicious cycle. We find that the people are looking to become pros and really take being a pro seriously, people won’t let themselves go over a certain amount. They make their lives a bit easier on themselves. It’s generally the least professional people come to me going, “I’ve got 50 pounds to lose. I’ve got eight weeks to lose the weight. Can you do it?”

Well, I can chop a leg off.

It all depends on the person really. It is the same kind of thing going up the pro ranks, they fight less but the longer camps, the training for specific things, like with bodybuilders thinking about pro qualifiers. They have shows in mind that they want to hit and do well on rather than, “I just want to get competing experience”, which I imagine is a similar kind of thing.

John:               Yeah, absolutely.

Mike:              The last thing I want to talk about, I’m trying not to take too much of your time because I know how busy you are. The really important stuff is who is the greatest superhero of all time?

John:               I like the cosmic dudes. I like Galactus.

Mike:              Really? I’m really surprised by that. I thought you would be a Captain America guy.

John:               No, I like cosmic dudes. I like Thanos I like Galactus. I like the Silver Surfer. I think the two best stories of all time; I think the Infinity Gauntlet with Thanos is probably my favorite story of all time.

Mike:              Yeah.

John:               If you have just seen the recent Thor movie …

Mike:              Yeah, the Avengers. It’s good to change that. It’s not gems, its stones now. I don’t know how they are going to fit the gauntlet in with it. Obviously the gem is attached to gauntlet.

John:               Right. That will be interesting. For years I’ve been saying, “Make a movie with Thanos. That would be awesome.” Then my other favorite story of all time was when Galactus came to Earth. They did a fantastic Four movie about it but it was absolutely horrible.

Mike:              It was terrible, wasn’t it?

John:               Horrible. They could have at least spent a couple of minutes talking about how the Silver Surfer became the Silver Surfer, first of all.

Mike:              Yeah, you just forgot about that bit, didn’t they?

John:               Yeah, they didn’t get into that at all. It would have only taken a five-minute flashback, right? It could have been great and then Galactus was a cloud. I’m like, “Come on.” It was horrible.

Mike:              Did you read, I think next year, is it next year or the year after it comes out?

John:               I hope it’s a lot better. I heard they were but I don’t know. You hear all these rumors about what they are doing and not doing.

Mike:              Yeah.

John:               The Thor movies have been pretty good. I like those.

Mike:              Yeah.

John:               The new Spiderman looks pretty good.

Mike:              It looks really good to me. It’s my favorite character, Spiderman.

John:               Did you see the new preview with Electro?

Mike:              Yeah, yeah and Rhino as well but it’s like a massive electric shoe, isn’t it that Rhino has got? That looks really good. I think Harry Osborne is walking through the Osborne Mansion and then there are the tentacles in the back in the case. It looks really good. I’m glad they didn’t mess it up. They have done it really well. I know it’s not done by Marvel, so I was a bit worried.

John:               Yeah, so there you go.

Mike: John anything new going on with your website?

John: Yes definitely! I am phreaking stoked about it actually. We sent out surveys asking people who had left why they did and what we could do to improve the site.

I am going to give you the short version of this. We sent out questionnaires asking people who left the site what we could do better? This painted a VERY clear picture. Here is what they said.

1) Beginner/intermediate content is needed (teach them how to build their own diet)
2) Content delivered more frequently instead of monthly
3) More "case studies" for non competitors/normal people to see exactly how we diet them to reach their goals
4) A search function (I know, duh)
5) More female in the trenches articles
6) Merge the two websites into one for navigation purposes

So when consulting with the company we work with Blue Laser Design Inc. we eventually decided to do a complete overhaul. This will address all 6 issues and much more.

We are looking at an early May delivery, but much of the issues above (all except #4,6) will be addressed soon, like as in a few days soon!

I have already added the beginner (will be called novice) piece and am building up content now in the existing website.

We have also started updating content weekly as well. Just those two things have really gave memberships a boost!

Mike: Do you really take the Biotest products you promote? Many guys don't in this industry.

Well I don't take ALL of their stuff, that would be a lot of pills and powder. I do take their intra mix and swear by it, as do many of my clients. It's called Plazma. it is currently my favorite supplement I have ever taken. I say currently because who knows what they will come up with next. I also take Mag 10 on and off throughout the day (di and tri peptides). I am enjoying a new product they have out now called phosphatidic acid. These are  my key supps. I do also take their fish oil now that I think about it. I can't imagine not taking the Plazma. It's unbelievable.

Mike:              I would like to say thanks very much for your time, John. It is really appreciated that you took the time.

John:               You’re welcome, you’re welcome. It was my pleasure, my pleasure. I’m happy to be on the show.

Stay tuned for more interviews coming soon

Stay Healthy,

Mike
